Jan-01-02, 02:17 PM (EST) "Texturing suggestions requested..." Happy New Year to everyone. I have modeled a front end loader in TSM and have made an attempt to texture it as close to possible as the prototype. Unfortunately, my skills with texturing are in need of a big improvement. If any of you kind souls have suggestions, I would greatly appreciate the pointers. Thanks,

Jan-01-02, 02:56 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." Um...........Exactly where are your skills lacking? Other than adding a Cat logo(smart move on your part to leave it off), I don't see any problem with this as is. Great JobJake Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-01-02, 03:32 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." Well I guess for my first attempt it will pass . I imagine I might be attempting to texture the loader as well as some of the pro's who have their work posted here.In particular, I would like some suggestions on the shading and window areas. My graphics (PhotoShop LE) program will not do the alhpa texturing. I know from my brief work on the loader, that the alignment of the windows on the poly surface requires fine tuning to adjust the area of the bitmap. I want to weather the unit with grease, diesel and dirt so any suggestions with that would be helpful too.Yes, I left the logo off to eliminate any problems with the post. This model is my interpetation of the real FEL.Any suggestions appreciated.Boomer Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-01-02, 03:38 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." Yes, I would like to provide this package to the community. My idea originally was to make two of these units. One unit (weathered) would be for the mine site locations on my route and the other, as you mentioned, on a flatcar in factory fresh paint. However, my knowledge is greatest with offroad construction equipment and very weak in railroad rolling stock. If you have a suggestion where I can find details for flatcar(s) I would be grateful for the help.Boomer Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-01-02, 06:47 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." Since you already have TSM, you've got a quick and dirty flatcar.
Start the SEICO-Boxcar, save the individual parts to a new folder MINUS the roof and body. Add a box for the deck, texture it, and bingo - Instant Flatcar. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-01-02, 07:11 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." LAST EDITED ON Jan-01-02 AT 07:43 PM (EST)Great idea. I'll look into the TSM flatcar and see what I can get done for a loader/flatcar combo. Thanks for the pointer.Boomeraddendum:I looked at the TSM boxcar and determined that the width of the bogie in their example is 15 feet in width. I believe this is too wide for prototypcial railcars. What should the width, length and deck height, etc. be for a typical flatcar? Thanks Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-01-02, 09:50 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." When I built my Heliflat, the carbody width ( the span from long side to long side ) was about 10' Wide. Use the stirrups as a guide. In the front view, it shows the stirrups exactly on the outer lines of 2 adjacent grid blocks, when the grid is set to 5 feet. 15' won't clear most areas. Without the boxcar body and roof your flatcar should be about 52' coupler-to-coupler, and 10' wide.
Hope this helps.----------Jake----------

Jan-01-02, 11:14 PM (EST) 14. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." Jake, thanks for the pointers. I will revisit the boxcar idea and study it a lot closer this time. I imagine the 10 foot width you used is a better representation of prototypical rolling stock. I looked at the TTX information (dimensional) on the link that a good soul posted in the forum and the widths are around the 10 foot area.I downloaded your Heliflat when it was first available. You did a great job with the entire package. I was expecially impressed with the smooth surface of the curved helicopter skin.

Jan-02-02, 08:06 AM (EST) 15. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." The Surface smoothing is taken care of in TSM itself. Highlight any part, then go to "Parts Properties(F2), and when the pop-up window shows, there's a small checkbox named " polygon smoothing" ( or something similar - I'm at work now ). Click it on and it just happens. Boy, does it make a difference!
Keep up the good work!----------------Jake----------------

Jan-02-02, 12:37 PM (EST) 16. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." Ok, I'll play with the polygon smoothing to see what I can do to improve some of the edges on the model. I made a crude flatcar and had some problems with the conversion. One successful conversion into MSTS and two failures. I think the poly count is hurting the overall process, but I'll keep tweaking to learn what I can. Thanks once again for your help.Boomer Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-02-02, 01:58 PM (EST) 17. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." Right now I feel like a bonehead. I found out why I was having the conversion problem.I am making two different versions of the flatcar with different loads. Earlier I ran a test and got one combination to work successfully. However, when I made the two different loads later on my test flatcar, I had problems as mentioned in the other post. In my investigation, I found that I had copied a wag file from my previous successful conversion, but forgot to change the file names within for the correct reference. Sorry if all of the details are pain, but I remember searching for answers to some of the problems I had with MSTS in the past and hope that my 'documentation' might help others in the future.Boomer Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-01-02, 10:56 PM (EST) 12. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." I agree, a backhoe (tracked) would be a nice addition. I have plans for several pieces of large construction and mining equipment. Thanks for the suggestion.Boomer Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-01-02, 10:17 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." Outstanding work!!!!!!!! I can use these as the IC has a spur into the Caterpiller plant in Decatur Illinois to load things like this on flat cars. I took photos of the place last week.Do you have other equipment you can upload?David Klemm

Jan-01-02, 11:05 PM (EST) 13. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." David, I have plans to create more equipment as time allows. I would like to create a tracked backhoe and maybe a blade. Other projects would include a 150 ton coal hauler and 170 ton rock truck. Well see... But I think the track hoe and blade will come before the others.I want to tweak the textures more on the loader before I upload it to the community file server. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and please provide me with more ideas for improving my work.Boomer Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-03-02, 06:39 AM (EST) 18. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." Excellent job, I work around big Cats and this certainly captures the look of the real thing with one exception. I have never seen a Cat loader look that clean, all the ones I see at the rock plants and job sites are covered in mud and dirt. While the model you have their would make an excellent flatcar load, if it were to be used near a coal mine or construction site, it will need some serious weathering. The voice of insanity in a seemingly normal world. Jan-03-02, 08:55 AM (EST) 19. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." LAST EDITED ON Jan-03-02 AT 08:55 AM (EST)I agree with you on the weathering aspect of the model and have plans to release to the community both versions, ie, railcar load and one for scenery atomsphere.Since this project was my first one, my learning curve has been quite steep. I'm getting some experience with the texturing on a second project and will apply this knowledge to the loader. Thank you for your kind remarks and I hope to have the finished product(s) ready for you to inspect in the near future.Boomer Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-04-02, 01:32 PM (EST) 21. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." Belgarion, I really haven't seen one on a railcar but I remember removing the cab, handrailings, etc. sometimes to reduce the overall height for highway tranport. Depends on the trialer and DOT height restrictions.Anyway, yes, I would like to know the method that the manufacurer uses to ship these unit on a railcar so I can present it as close as possible. I have gone to Peoria several times, but was kept away from the shipping areas.Boomer

Jan-04-02, 03:54 PM (EST) 22. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." These things used to go through the city I lived in about four times a day.During transit, the units were broken up into about twelve parts, spread out over several TTX trailer cars.I think they were carried as such: seperating the front from back, engine from frame, wheels, cab, bucket, lifting arms, and a large box that contained what I suppose to be small parts and what not.Dump trucks were done the same way, however their beds were carried on a sepearte car and labled :Extreme Width: at times, the beds were even carried on a seperate special train alltogther. Jan-04-02, 04:22 PM (EST) 23. "RE: Texturing suggestions requested..." Great information Starlight. I'm sure I will break the package down for the railcar configuration or maybe provide both assembled on a railcar and the separate components on railcars for the file download choices. It's taking me a little time to improve the windows on the loader. I do not have the ability to use the alpha channels so I'm trying to work out something better than what was presented. Getting closer and I've been able to reduce the poly count in my tweaking process. Thanks again for the information.Boomer Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
