Dec-06-01, 10:10 PM (EST) "3D trains GP9 reskin" Hi, I'm new to the forum, Psp7 and repainting. Does anyone know how to change the windows on 3D trains GP9 from the reflective sky they now have to transparent? Seems a shame to waste an interior when you can't even see it...Thanks,Dad... Dec-07-01, 03:31 AM (EST) 1. "RE: 3D trains GP9 reskin" Hiyep, it's really easy. All you have to do is colour the window areas a solid black in the Alpha channel. That will give you completely see-through windows.Cheers

Dec-09-01, 06:30 PM (EST) 2. "RE: 3D trains GP9 reskin" Well I couldn't figure out how to do that... The most I could do was change the reflective sky pattern to black, but still no transparancy. How do you paint in the alpha channel? I selected 'load alpha channel' which selects all the objects, and I can cut and paste them to a new layer, but it won't allow me to paint in the previous layer I cut them from. How does one access the alpha channel to paint in it in Paint Shop Pro 7?
Maybe I'm just not getting the technique. Anyone? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: 3D trains GP9 reskin" Click Masks on the upper row.On the pop menu got to NEW.On the next menu, click FROM IMAGE.In the new window, click ANY NON-ZERO VALUE. then OK.Now go back to the MASKS drop menu.Click VEIW MASK, Then click EDIT MASK.Now paint the area you want transparent black. It will change the Alpha.Make sure you SAVE TO ALPHA CHANNEL before you close out.

Dec-10-01, 11:21 PM (EST) 5. "RE: 3D trains GP9 reskin" Hi!
Okay, After a couple of tries, here's what I figured out: In order to get everything transparent all at the same time, you need to load and edit the existing alpha channel, and overwrite it, because you can only save one Alpha channel to tga- no critsism here, Your help was very right, and it got me going, and I appreciate it- thanks for the help! I imagine this would be the process if you didn't have an alpha channel and needed to create one:Click Masks on the upper row.
On the pop menu got to NEW.
On the next menu, click FROM IMAGE.
In the new window, click ANY NON-ZERO VALUE. then OK.
And this would be the process if you were editing existing such as 3dTrains:1. Click Masks on the upper row. Select Load From Alpha Channel
Now go back to the MASKS drop menu.2. Click VEIW MASK, Then click EDIT MASK.3. Now paint the area you want transparent black. It will change the Alpha.4. Make sure you SAVE TO ALPHA CHANNEL before you close out.Boom, You get transparent windows! Now I have transparent windows, but I also have the problem I saw someone else had in the forum -when you look through the cab NO SCENERY! Is this that thing I've been reading where you have to specify + or - ? I tried and tried to find that post going back as far as Nov 1. Can anybody help me with this one? I've gotten one step closer- How do I see the scenery on the other side of the engine through the window? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-11-01, 11:24 AM (EST) 6. "RE: 3D trains GP9 reskin" Is it the color value that you use to fill it in with? Is that why 3DTrains uses blue-green (cyan) instead of black? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-11-01, 10:03 PM (EST) 8. "RE: 3D trains GP9 reskin" Wow, is this THE Marc Nelson of 3D Trains? I'm honored! Thank you for taking the time to help a little fish like me! Hey, I've been trying to do a repaint, (my first) of your GP9 demo, and I changed the windows to transparent, no problem, but there is no scenery through the cab on the other side of the engine. At starting point in, say, West Coram, all you can see is the barren land and no trees, buildings, etc.
How do you fix this using Paint Shop Pro 7 ?Many Thanks,Dad...

Dec-11-01, 11:59 PM (EST) 9. "RE: 3D trains GP9 reskin" I'm just another bloke like you playin' with trains. Besides, many of the other guys here answered faster than I. As for the transparency issue, I don't think anyone's figured out exactly how Kuju did it...I have my own theories, but that food for another thread. I use PSP 6 for most of the "normal" stuff, and fire up Photoshop for the transparencies - partly because of PSP's speed (plus the handy Browse feature) vs. my familiarity with Photoshop. The original GP9 skin I made the windows just cloudy enough so that the missing scenery behind would hardly be noticed. I think something like a 150/150/150 grey should do the trick, without making the interior unviewable. I wish there was another way, but I don't know one ATM.Cheers!

Dec-12-01, 11:34 AM (EST) 10. "RE: 3D trains GP9 reskin" Thanks Marc, this has all been real good information! I have noticed that I get white windows when I paint the alpha mask at 39/39/39, and then they go transparent somewhere between 39 and 31, and you can't put anything on the background layer to cover it, it just disappears. It's all a big mystery, but knowing that it is an issue with the original rather than what I'm doing helps a lot. BTW, I thought the reflective sky on the BN was very ingenious, I was just trying to see inside the cab like in Columbus' U25B that has the pin-up girl!
Thanks so much for alla your help!Dad! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
