Nov-12-01, 07:13 PM (EST) "In need of MKT engines...(near desperation!)" Greetings one and all.....I've been on here before and was seeing if I could get someone to skin a SD40-2 and a GP38-2 in MKT green and yellow. I know Woody was hard at work on an SD40 but understandably he's caught up in other things so I think that one is on permanent hold. I have some sample photos to give you an idea what they look like. If someone could do these for me, you'd have my eternal gratitude. (whatever that's worth :-D ) Message Areas - "In need of MKT engines...(near desperation!)" – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Nov-14-01 AT 01:09 PM (EST)LAST EDITED ON Nov-14-01 AT 01:07 PM (EST)I see you already found out about Ken. I think he was the only one that had the courage to trying to tackle those beasties. I like the scheme a lot, but if it's as much of a pain to skin as it is to paint on a model....Henry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-14-01, 03:15 PM (EST) 2. "RE: In need of MKT engines...(near desperation!)" Absolutely, I totally understand what you're saying. The striping on the front and nose of the engine is quite tedious and tough......that's why if Woody or someone else could do a good job on those for me, I would probably give them some compensation for such hard work, like 5-10 bucks for each engine or something. Like I said earlier, I've grown up near and around an MKT (now UP) main line and would love to have those engines added to my collection. Thanks for replying. Nov-15-01, 07:44 AM (EST) 3. "RE: In need of MKT engines...(near desperation!)" I have only been at this reskin/repaint business for about a month now. I usually do the Illinois Central (Gulf) and related roads. However, I couldn't help but to try a MKT SD40. I have only seen one of these in person, but the image sure stays with you. Here is what I have come up with.

Message Areas - "In need of MKT engines...(near desperation!)" – image 7 I am really disappointed with the nose stripes. Not quite lined up. It is definately a pain in the hind end. I also need to fix the windows for transparency.Sorry I couldn't do better for you. Thanks,

Nov-15-01, 08:48 AM (EST) 4. "RE: In need of MKT engines...(near desperation!)" Hey, that's not bad at all!! Those stripes and getting that John Deere green in there makes it tougher than the average skin. I think it looks quite good. Keep it up!Kudos,

Nov-15-01, 11:33 AM (EST) 5. "RE: In need of MKT engines...(near desperation!)" LAST EDITED ON Nov-15-01 AT 11:36 AM (EST)I think you're off to a pretty good start. If you don't mind, I have a couple of pointers:The stripes on the nose and end are a bit thinner (roughly 10 or so inches in width) and more numerous. In addition, they aren't exactly 45-degree stripes. I'm not sure of the technical term, but they're a bit more "relaxed". The angle from the vertical is greater than 45-degrees, but I don't think it's quite 60-degrees. Model-wise, I start with the nose stripes and then work down the cab sides from there. I don't know how well that will work in 3-d modeling, though. And the "MKT" on the side should be more centered between the dynamic brake housing and the traction motor blower duct. (I've noticed this because I did the same things on a batch of Kato HO-scale models last year! )If you haven't done so, check out George Elwood's website for pictures. I think he has several shots of all 37 of Katy's SD40-2s from a variety of angles and viewpoints.Henry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-16-01, 03:48 AM (EST) 6. "RE: In need of MKT engines...(near desperation!)" Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.Tha problem I am having with the end and nose as well as the short hood is the way the model uses the TGA. On the TGA, all of those areas have the stripes properly proportioned. They get stretched when I put it in the Sim.I ran out of time last night, but it's a new day so I am getting ready to try her again.Let Y'all know how it goes. Thanks,

Nov-16-01, 06:44 AM (EST) 7. "RE: In need of MKT engines...(near desperation!)" It is official. I am now completely insane.I am having the same problem my wife did when she did the ICG Eagle. The right front corner of the nose is not lining up. No matter what I try it refuses to cooperate. I got the stripes a little more to my liking. They are close to matching.

Nov-16-01, 08:44 AM (EST) 8. "RE: In need of MKT engines...(near desperation!)" Wow Sam, it keeps looking better and better. I understand all the transfer problems you're having with the stripes. It looks like the top left hand corner stripe of the nose next to the numbers is a bit thicker than the other side but that's also from the conversion I figure. The only other thing I've noticed besides that is that I think the font on the road numbers up top is just a bit different. I was looking at that engine i.r.l. from some pics on George Elwood's website last night and noticed. But hey, other than that, it looks great!!! I wonder in your current state of insanity that you might like to try that on a GP38-2???? Thanks for all your hard work.Cheers,

Nov-16-01, 03:49 PM (EST) 10. "RE: In need of MKT engines...(near desperation!)" LAST EDITED ON Nov-16-01 AT 03:51 PM (EST)I may tinker around with a 38 this weekend. The whole cab front needs re done I think. I am not satisfied with the stripes there.I'll try a few other things when I get home from work. Thanks,

Nov-17-01, 05:54 AM (EST) 12. "RE: In need of MKT engines...(near desperation!)" I lifted the numberboards directly off a photo. I wish I could have used photos for the whole thing. The 38 may give me more problems. I can't use the MSTS default, because it's crap. I'd have stripes everywhere. The new 38 we have will put stripes on the back of the cab. We'll see. Here it is.

Nov-17-01, 11:32 AM (EST) 13. "RE: In need of MKT engines...(near desperation!)" one word Sam.........WOW. Absolutely looks great. If the GP gets a bit much for ya, would it be easier to make copies of the SD by renumbering? I know the numberboards you could just copy from photos but I dunno about the side numbers. Just keep me posted. But 632 looks ready to go, can't wait to drive it! Believe me, your hard work is INCREDIBLY appreciated. Cheers,

Nov-17-01, 11:01 PM (EST) 17. "RE: In need of MKT engines...(near desperation!)" OK, let me know what you think of these.I was thinking that six locomotives with only the numbers changed might be kind of humdrum.
So I have weathered them to make them appear a little different from each other. If you like them that way OK, if you want them without weathering, I can do that also. Here they are.

Nov-18-01, 00:11 AM (EST) 18. "RE: In need of MKT engines...(near desperation!)" Greetings once again......Sam......those engines look wonderful and the weathering was a nice touch. I've been looking at George Elwood's website of MKT engines and stock (great references during your hard work on the SDs and GPs). From what I know of MKT as far as rolling stock goes, they hauled primarily coal, oil, and gravel. Most of their rolling stock were the 100T hoppers, boxcars, some low gondolas, but no autoracks (although it was interesting to see them on your customized train ) There were several cars that MKT had with the Union Pacific logo just after UP absorbed the MKT in the late 80s. George's site as MANY cars that can give you a better reference than me just sitting here and talking to you about them. http://www.dnaco.net/~gelwood If you want to try your hand at a couple of them, be my guest. I don't think I'll complain too much....heheheh I kinda figured that MS version GP38 was going to be a tough one to mess with. I did see where some people have come up with a detailed version of that engine but don't know anymore than that. I must tell you Sam, your work is excellent. Just let me know what more you decide to try and things and give me your address when you're done. You deserve some sort of compensation for all you've done. Keep me posted.Cheers,
