LAST EDITED ON May-16-02 AT 04:18 PM (EDT)I'm designing some passenger activities for the Ohio Rails "Classic" (steam transition era) time period. Does anyone here have infomration on what freight and passenger traffic levels might be appropriate for a route like this? I'll be trying to dig up some of McClelland's old articles on the V&O, but I'd really appreciate any information anyone has to make this more realistic.
The two routes were actually the B&O and PRR in the early days. You could go with those and you'd be fairly accurate. The B&O would be the WV&O and the the OR&W (formerly ORRR) would be the PRR.If you've seen the equipment Leith Platten had done with the OR&W, we used PRR colors. Now the OR&W did actually exist. Jim Ward found a book and sent it to me. It was mostly steam. But there isn't any OR&W steamers in the library though. Cameron Lashley has a site that features some OR&W information but I don't recall it off hand.If you plan to run the OR&W route with steamers I suggest double-stacked engines and short trains as some of those grades are too steep unless those steamers got a running start. Now I've done it with one steamer and up to 12 fully loaded coal cars. So I'm thinking you can do 2 engines (TA's USRA light or Conn McCarthy's Mikado (my favorite steamer)) and do 24 fully loaded coal cars. The WV&O side shouldn't present much difficulty being the only steep part is between McConnelsville and Zanesville. But you got a fairly long run there inwhich to get up a good head of steam.Jan 98 of MR is I know one place to find info on the V&O.Hope this helps!Rich G.
