Apr-21-02, 05:11 PM (EDT) "Naming convention for not named sidings?" Hi everyone!
How to refer to a siding with no name? As you may know naming tracks, sidings, platforms and so is a route developers domain. "Pick up car 32585 #0 located at XY Manufacturing Track #3" This work order was issued by an activitiy designer. The route developer supplied the name for this location. He named this certain track, that's fine!
Unfortunately I would like to position a consist on the 2nd left track of the mentioned XY Manufacturing track #3. How shall I refer to the not named siding? Am I referring to track #1 or to track #5? How do I reach the siding?
'Take the next switch (exit) and turn left' is not an appopriate answer. Not far away there's a wye and I just came back from. Now left is right and right ist left... Perhaps the compass may help. At train simming contrary to fligth simming it is no common knowledge that North is zero and South is 180. Hmm, what's East and West? Is it really neccessary to know?
The terms right and left are relative directions. The four cardinal point North East South and West of the compass rose are absolute directions. Do I need all? Do I need any??
"Go to two sidings in direction of the greater numbers on the compass?" If you travel the wye or not, in this case it doesn't matter.
What's that all about? There are alternative (siding)ways to assemble a train on a switchyard. How to describe the various possibilities if there is a close by wye??
Thanks for reading! Any thoughts or answers?
bye

Apr-23-02, 01:34 PM (EDT) 1. "RE: Naming convention for not named sidings?" I can understand your frustration, but I think the real answer is to venture into the Route Editor and name the otherwise un-named sidings yourself. Despite the well documented problems with the Route Editor, there is a lot of pleasure to be gained by editing someone else's route as a starter before moving on to creating your own routes. The basic idea of a named siding is that, like the signals and the station platforms, you place a hidden marker on the track in question and give it a name. This will then show up when you press F6 during the activity. The "Named Siding" will also show up in the Activity Editor and can be incorporated into an Activity.I would make a backup copy of your route to begin with, and then use the F1 help to learn about moving around and making changes.
It is daunting at first, but there is plenty of advice available from these ForumsGood luck with it...

Apr-23-02, 03:25 PM (EDT) 2. "RE: Naming convention for not named sidings?" Thanks for answering! Unfortunately I'm looking for a more universal (naming) convention to solve the problem. Ok, this is about train simming. In the world of real trains they obviously solved the problem. I don't know by which means. A little while ago at the forums I read about really mad approaches of real world train companies. Hopefully there are other ways!
Please refer to my temporary website to understand why this is so important to me.

Once again thanks!

Apr-26-02, 02:16 PM (EDT) 3. "RE: Naming convention for not named sidings?" If you think of each siding as a line of text, let sidings be delineated the same way as outline and index sections.Maybe better:In the U.S. Air Force, warehouse locations are broken down by alternating letter and number: Warehouse 216 Aisle A Bin 2 Section F would read: 216 A 2 F, and you’d know just where to go.jivajiva Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-27-02, 10:58 AM (EDT) 4. "RE: Naming convention for not named sidings?" If I change a route and add names I have to transfer the whole route if I want to share it with friends. The route editor is an adventure game of its own. That's a great opportunity to share my MSTS crash with others.
Yes, there is more than one naming convention. Unfortunately none applies. In my opinion it is more constructive to discuss possible naming schemes. Requirements for naming not named sidings:
A short name
A logic and easy understandable naming scheme
Approach from both directions does not change the meaningAs example an activity editor screenshot: PO&N v4 Stevens Point region.
(Please assume that there were no consists)
The platform track (lower track)has the name Stevens Point. There are five dead end switchyard tracks. One track in the middle has the name SP yard. That's the only name I have.
In this example I can use the term left and right because it is a dead end switchyard. So 'SP yard right 3' refers to the upper track. What if I could approach SP yard from both directions? The Left and Right term will not longer work!
I refuse to accept that there is no way to address a not named siding correctly. Is there a flight simmer who can help with his experience of compass usage?
Thanks for reading, thoughts and answers!

Apr-27-02, 06:59 PM (EDT) 5. "RE: Naming convention for not named sidings?" Hello Again! Consider this: Take SP Yard track and give it a previously unused letter or number: “A” for example. You’d call it “SP Yard A. ”Subsequent similar value tracks get subsequent sequential values: B, C, etc. Then, sidings from each similar level get numbers: B1, B2, etc.Go on like that. See example of U.S. Air Force system above. I believe this approach deals handily with your quest!jivajiva Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
