Dec-04-01, 05:10 PM (EST) "Frame rates for 70's juice train" To all how are running the 70's Juice Train (from SCL), what kind of frame rates are you getting? I am lucky to get above 10 (normally 24-32). Looking at the activity I began to see why; an 64 car player train, 21 AI trains, and almost 300 rail cars along the route. Might need to go in and remove some of them to get better rates. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-05-01, 00:58 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Frame rates for 70's juice train" Yes, the framerates on this activity just flat out SUCK. The "lite" version of the same activity was okay though, I got about 18FPS with that one, so at least it was playable! The EMRR activites seem to be giving me the best framerates, sometimes well into the 40s! Probably one reason why I use it so often. Don Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-05-01, 06:42 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Frame rates for 70's juice train" Well, I created the activity on a 900 mhz AMD with a low-end vid card with only 16 mb of video RAM (Nvidia Vanta). Except for a serious stutter in the first few minutes approaching New Carrollton, which has been a problem for every NEC activity I've done, I maintained a steady average of 15 fps, down to 12 for some meets and up to 20 in many areas. The activity was tested on two other systems with no reports of fps problems. I find anything over 12 acceptable on my system, but of course your mileage may vary. Sorry if you are having problems, perhaps a post with specs to compare systems would be helpful.Generally, I figure if the fps is acceptable to me, it shouldn't be a problem for most users with a better video card. Obviously, if the fps is a concern, you can open up the activity editor and delete some consists. The NEC is a busy place, so I put lots of stuff in to make it seem more real. In fact, a tester on an early version commented that too many sidings were empty, so I added some consists. If anyone reading this wants to try it out, the download is at http://www.calmstorm.com/scl-csx/activity.htm Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-05-01, 06:55 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Frame rates for 70's juice train" And for those with an SCL interest, our A-line project is coming along, with some of us testing an alpha route version with about 50 miles of track and limited scenery. We're aiming for a public release in another month or so, so stay tuned. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

You did a great job with it and it was challenging to play. I was only trying to find out if it was just my computer that was giving me the poor frame rates.I have a 450MHz PII, 512 MB memory, and a 64MB GeForce 2 card, so I wanted to check to see if I should try and upgrade the processor to someting a little faster (1.5 GHz??).Again, many thanks for the activity and keep out the good work. Dec-05-01, 12:10 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Frame rates for 70's juice train" Sounds like your processor is the main limitation. If MSTS is your only serious gaming, and most activities give you acceptable fps on your system, I personally wouldn't think a few consist-intensive activities are reason enough to upgrade. If you want a system to handle the train and filight sims coming out over the next few years, that's probably a better reason to upgrade. No offense, glad to get the feedback, if I'm not mad at Don (impossible, since he's given me lots of constructive input on several prior activities), I'm certainly not upset at you Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Frame rates for 70's juice train" Sixman, don't feel bad, I'm running a 1.4g with 512 PC800 RDram, and a 64mg v/card too, and the rates are a bit low....but it didn't help that I added a bit of power, upped it to about 100 cars and threw a few ESE "business cars" on the tail!!!! Dec-06-01, 06:36 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Frame rates for 70's juice train" LAST EDITED ON Dec-06-01 AT 06:48 AM (EST)I've got a 900 Duron and a 64 meg Geforce 2, but still could only get 10FPS out of this one. Too bad too, I was really looking forward to it. I really like NEC freight activites. This one looks like it had some cool AI traffic and what not involved. Dig the strobe lights on the E60! Glad to hear the A-line is progressing nicely. Looks as though there's gonna be some swell things on the horizon with this sim what with all these new up-and-coming routes!
