Nov-05-01, 06:48 PM (EST) 1. "RE: steam on marias" My guess would be 4-8-4 Northerns for one. I can't remember what GN used (I'm more of an NP fan). But 2-8-8-2 Yellowstones and 4-6-6-4 Challengers were popular western freight engines, along with 4-6-2 Pacifics for light passenger service. I think NP even used a Challenger now and then for passenger runs due to grades and size of trains.I would imagine that GN wasn't all that much different.

"RE: steam on marias" I cannot give chapter and verse, but my uncles were dispatchers on the Whitefish division and my grandfather died in the yard there in a shunting accident. I recall there being many mallets and later the cab-forward sort, for the pull over the 3 sets of mountains, particularly the Great Divide run in TS. The Northerns were common, too, particularly on the Empire Builder. The Old Professor Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
