Sep-22-01, 10:55 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Good Tutorial" It's more a manual than a tutorial. I called it a tutorial cause it takes you through the interface screen. You don't actually create an activity. I do believe it will help because it concentrates on the couple of areas that I see being asked about on here the most. Which happened to be the same areas I had trouble with too. As far as getting activities to work, most of it isn't hard. What's hard is when you get into the more advanced subjects or complicated activites involving AI Trains, signals and Passenger stops. I got thrown off a day cause I've had some pretty big computer troubles today. But don't let that handsome fella, LawrenceKellie throw ya, he had a big part in editing the manual so it reads much much better. He threw in some extra ideas for me to follow up on figuring I didn't have enough to do already. He's really looking after you guys. I think when it will be done, which should be soon cause I hate unfinished projects lingering, you will get some help from it. Just give me a couple more days...Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-23-01, 08:33 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Good Tutorial" Rich, if you would, please go to your other thread and read my post there. I will be looking for this file right along with the rest of the 'dimmies' who haven't been able to figger this out for themselves. But I do hope you haven't treated the format of this new one as the format was for the route help.As I said in the other post, it's not the CONTENT I object to, it's the format.Have a nice day,pa Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-23-01, 11:38 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Good Tutorial" Xerxes... Without any reference other than 'other thread' I don't know what it is your referring to. Route Help was done in a PDF format. If you don't like PDFs you're not going to like this manual.
In defense of the old works like those help files, I hate to say this but you may be a little spoiled by how easily we can answer questions today. Back when those were put together, you didn't have 40 pages of posted questions and answers to search through back then. I believe there was only 15 pages at the most in the Route Help forum and only 5 here when the first Route Help.pdf was posted. There were very few people who really knew how to do much and some of them I don't see anymore. But those pdf's are a compilation of posts grouped together to put some of the reseach at your fingertips. Back then, if you wanted answers, you mostly figured them out for yourself or you learned as LawrenceKellie says alot, search. Also, back then my goal was to get a route done, and not to create PDFs. What I posted was for the benefit of others and they were a major undertaking to do while taking time away from doing my route. So please cut those 'old timers' a little slack; just remember back then, we were learning the same undocumented editors as we are still today without the benefit of what we know today. As for the Q&A format, well, I wasn't about to sit down and create a document about something I didn't know much about. As for topics and answers being more scattered in the first version than the second, again, time was a factor. Back then, the route editor was still an enigma and a daunting task to document. Also, keep in mind that's not me answering those questions or making the questions up. As topics were raised in the forums that I knew would be beneficial to me later, I copied them into a word processor. I did include a number of questions which would've been beneficial for others and to make the pdf more comprehensive. For instance I included a number of questions concerning the flat terrain or nothing but white because at that time still, the question was being asked.Anyway, I wanted to speak up for my work as I really like the things. Alot of people have. For me, if you wanna know something you are gonna have to sometimes, even now, figure some things out for yourself cause none of us were there when Kuju wrote MSTS; so none of us can fully write anything abridged for msts. Finally, although my first work was small (1 tile), not only was it fairly complete, it was also one of the first. Do you know what was being said back then too? Whatever people had, even if it wasn't complete, post it. Yep, and now look what's said, make sure it has an installer. We've come a long way. Just remember, none of us are getting paid to be here or are members of any support team. So things aren't as perfect as they should be. Sep-23-01, 06:26 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Good Tutorial" Hey think nothing of it! I didn't take it as a beating. The material in those pdfs are a bit dated and it would be nice to go back and clean 'em up. This activity tutorial/ manual.. whatever it is... was more a kneejerk reaction to someone posting in the route forum. It was shortly after the towers tragedy and it was a good way to get involved again. What I've gotten smart about doing here recently is asking for folks to check my work. LK did and another guy Paul volenteered, and I believe these guys are taking the extra step to make the manual more comprehendable and thorough. I approached the writing with the same attitude you saw me write about above, so credit these guys for looking out for y'all a bit better than I was. It was tough to write let me tell ya. Just figuring a way to approach writing about the actvity editor is befuddling. I started it out to be a tutorial but it turned out more to be a manual. And again, with LK's help and Paul's, the end result will have a more tangible approach and direction to the topic, where what I wrote was floating between the two. If you ever read any of LK's responses to people's questions and appreciated his thoroughness and directness, you will appreciate this. I've reread a good bit of this tutorial and it's much better now than what I originally wrote. Definetely worth the wait. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-23-01, 03:16 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Good Tutorial" Even though Rich is declaring this work a manual instead of a tutorial--and technically according to the denotation of the terms, he is correct--it would be a very small step to move this to a real "tutorial."Rich has written in clear, concise language an incredible amount of information that can be directly applied to almost any activity you want to create. A tutorial, on the other hand, many times, is limited to its single activity. In my book, Rich's work is much more valuable than most tutorials.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-22-01, 06:27 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Good Tutorial" Well, I know of many, will have to dig them out, not that I refer to them much as I learnt the basics in the help files then loaded an activity that came with MSTS and really spent some time looking at it, BUT NOt SAVING IT or this will screw up your game.
Dont want to put you off, but no matter what tutorial you may get, getting it to work the way you want it is a different matter. You will be ripping your hair out when you get into it.
Good Luck. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
