Example i would like to replace the dash9's in the dawn tank train on the marias pass with sd40's or others how is this accomplished?

Sep-21-01, 02:27 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Replacing default locos in default consists" Hi,Not a stupid question.
The consist files have an extension of .con. You can find them in the folder Trains/Consists.Most of the time the display name is the same as the file name.Open the consist file with WordPad or an third party Editor that can handle Unicode. I use EditPad Pro ($29.95 www.jgsoft.com) that can handle multiple files and has a whole bunch of features. Now in the Consist file look for rules with Engine or Wagon, after the curled bracket you will find the word EngineData or WagonData and than between curled brackets two words, for example: Dash9 Dash9. The first one is the name of the engine- (.eng) or the wagonfile (.wag). The second is the name of the folder where the wagon or engine file sits.
So you have to change these words. Be carefull and work exactly as MSTS cannot load your engines or wagons.
You can also add engines and wagons or cut them, simply by copy, cut and paste. Change the UID's, as the name says these are Unique Identifier Data's.Good luck,

Sep-21-01, 04:01 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Replacing default locos in default consists" There's another way too. But first, let me say this. Changing the defaults is not a good idea. If you download an activity or route, and they call on the default, and yours is changed, it could mess up the theme of the activity. By the same token, if you create an activity and the defaults are changed, to the user who downloads your activity, things may seem screwy. In any event, you can go into the activitiy editor (brave soul), go through the motions of creating a new activity. Then, right click on a piece of track and a little menu will appear. You'll see, Place Consist. Clicking that will open another window with the options of creating a new consists, editing a previous consist and so forth. My advice is to create a new consist and go from there. But if you want to edit one, click on the down arrow til you see the consist you want and then click on it. Press Edit. Now you are in the consist editor. Choose your engine, by clicking what motive power you want, then locate the engine. Drag it down from the little bitmap to the the big viewing window. Click the mouse button and drag. You can delete the previous engine by dragging it from the big window to the coupler just above it. You can reverse an engine facing by right clicking on it.Finally, save and exit. Sep-21-01, 04:32 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Replacing default locos in default consists" I always open up the activity's and place different loco's in the players consist just buy editing it, taking out the 2 or three I dont want and bunging in 2 or 3 I do.. But I never touch cars in the consist..I did once ...took out the last car to place a cabosse and at the end of the activity i failed cause the car was missing....
Anyway I'd say going threw the editor is much safer than muckin about with wordpad... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
