Sep-15-01, 04:29 PM (EST) "(beta) tutorial posted" I've just completed a rough draft of an activity tutorial. It's 30 pages long. I've only proofed it slightly but if you'd like to take a look at it and offer suggestions, I'd be greatful. My eyes have gotten blurry working on it so I thought I would offer it up for a bit til I get working on it again. If you are interested and like to offer some suggestions here's the sitewww.edmfamily.com/msts/index.htm Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-17-01, 12:52 PM (EST) 2. "RE: (beta) tutorial posted" Lawrence,Yes, that is correct. I've been working on the second draft for about a day now and it is going very quickly. After getting through as much as I have in the 2nd draft, I decided having the first draft was down right embarrassing so I deleted it from the site. I hope to have the 2nd draft up tonight. Sorry for this inconvenience.I'll post the event in the route forum when I repost.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-17-01, 12:56 PM (EST) 3. "RE: (beta) tutorial posted" BTW, my job heavily involves proofing--grammar, etc. If you would like me to "proof" it, just e-mail it to me.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-17-01, 02:46 PM (EST) 4. "RE: (beta) tutorial posted" Lawrence, I just reposted it. I'd like to take you up on your offer. The post is in pdf format; it's not secured though. Or I can email you the source but I'll need your email. Mine is rgarber@vnet.net Mostly what I have to do now is include a table of contents and I think it's ready. Anybody wanting to contribute something surely can especially if you find wrong information in there. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-17-01, 04:56 PM (EST) 6. "RE: (beta) tutorial posted" So far, I have proofed to the page where "Service Editor" is located. One suggestion at this point, insert page numbers! Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-17-01, 05:08 PM (EST) 7. "RE: (beta) tutorial posted" Page numbers, footers, headers, table of contents comes next. The first step was writing the thing and making it coherent. I haven't decided to move this to a desktop publisher or keep it in Word. Think of this as a beta! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-17-01, 07:53 PM (EST) 10. "RE: (beta) tutorial posted" LAST EDITED ON Sep-17-01 AT 07:56 PM (EST)I was hoping to get to you before you made any more announcements; however, I see that you already have announced the document in at least the Routes forum. All further discussion of my edits will be done by e-mail. I plan on sending two e-mail, the first being general consistency errors I noticed (so you can start working on them) and the second the final report. How you fix the document is certainly up to you, and I do not "require" or "expect" you to do what I suggest.Just to provide a little more information, almost my entire work career--I am 46--has been spent in writing. For the last ten years, however, I have been working with some very excellent technical writers/editors, and I have branched out into editing documents--from books to legal documents to scientific tomes! The edits I will be suggesting can be daunting, but do not lose heart. You have a very good start. This document will provide invaluable information to users/developers of MSTS.By the way, if you e-mail me the Word document, I can then do the edits "for you," using Track Changes. Then you can choose to accept or delete them as you see fit, that is if you are familiar with Track Changes. My e-mail address is lawrence at calacreek dot com. If you're not a "robot," you should be able to figure that out. Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-17-01, 10:45 PM (EST) 12. "RE: (beta) tutorial posted" What I did was to shut down the beta at the site. That's the nice part of posting a beta there, rather than at train-sim.com. It's nothing to make a retraction anyway and for the short time it was up there I doubt I had very many takers. I'm just gonna send you the Word document and let you make the changes. I'm in the USA if that helps on what English to use. I've seen a number of your posts and you write very very well and I have no problem making this a shared project. In fact, sometimes I thought you was J Stevens in cognito because you two write so much alike. Tech writing was something I always wanted to do myself. Thanks for volenteering. Who knows? Maybe Kuju will want it and clue us in on a couple of things; now that would be nice! I can think of quite a few questions right off the bat. Afterwards, we'll run the composite before our friend CMO, and let him offer any insights. And thanks! I've been wanting to do a Thomas version of my East Metro Route and explore this AI train stuff that J Steven was talking about. This has my curiosity up in a bad way.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-17-01, 08:27 PM (EST) 11. "RE: (beta) tutorial posted" One final question before I starting writing the e-mail. Are you writing in British English or American English. Punctuation is different, and I don't want to suggest "corrections" where there is not an "error."Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-18-01, 01:27 AM (EST) 13. "RE: (beta) tutorial posted" Hi. I really do appreciate your tutorial file. It has helped a lot. I just wish it was in MSWord form as I don't have Adobe Editor and can't edit it. Thanks and best regards, Bob. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-18-01, 09:00 AM (EST) 14. "RE: (beta) tutorial posted" I use Adobe Acrobat because anybody can get hold of the reader portion of it since it's free. I had to upgrade to Word 97 from my older version just cause I couldn't read some of the files. There were alot of posts out there too of people having the same trouble. So PDFs is the way to go. What you could do is email me where you see trouble. Not grammatical, incoherent or mispellings, LK is already taking care of that. Any additional information or things that just ain't so that needed taking out of the file would be great through and you can just send them to my email address. The tutorial was written for the community and I have no problems making it a community project. any help be appreciated

Sep-18-01, 10:40 AM (EST) 15. "RE: (beta) tutorial posted" Adobe does not have a product called "Adobe Editor." I would assume that you are referring to Adobe Acrobat. However, the Adobe PDF Reader is a free download from Adobe, at this link:http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.htmlIt will allow you to read PDF files.Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
