Sep-09-01, 06:25 AM (EST) "Broker Paths - Deleting" I have many "broken paths" in my Player Service window due to frequent changes in track, etc. I have tried to simply push the delete key in that window but each time I return to the Activity Editor the broken paths reappear. Short of going in and reediting each path to restore them to usable status how do I simply get rid of them???

Sep-09-01, 10:26 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" The whole 'broken' thing, whether it's points or paths make no sense to me whatever their function maybe. What I do is delete the service and start over. I figure the program is remembering that stuff and as quirky as it is, I think getting rid of it is a good idea. But I'm clueless what the point of them is. I mean, you delete a point and you get this red line right? But you can't connect or reconnect??? Beats me. Sep-09-01, 01:08 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" Baffling.... I've tried to overcome this by going in and "Editing" those activities with broken paths and when I remove the start and finish points I get a PURPLE line over the former path. Reediting each old path that has become corrupted gets to be a real pain. See my other post about world tiles and tdb being "out of sync" because I added new trackage to extend my route. I guess everytime you do more work on a route you run the risk of corrupting everything you've already done????? I saw a fix on here that suggested that the advanced option to rebuild the tdb when starting a new work session really doesn't do what it is supposed to. Do you remember what the fix was... had something to do with going in and restoring a backup file or something with the ~ character before it????

Sep-09-01, 02:30 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" Oh I know what you're talking about... heh.. that was me who said that. There are a couple of ways to fix a broken database. One is to delete the road and track database in the route directory of your route. Make sure you backup first. Supposedly the route will rebuild the database from your world tiles. Try that first but make sure you do the backup thing first before anything. If that works, I'm jealous. Problem is, if msts crashes during the rebuild, that feature isn't much help. What I originally posted was great for my route when it was only 1 tile. With a large set of world tiles, that idea gets harder to do. But if you can find the tile that's causing problems it will still work. Just take the ~w.bk and change it to .w and that will bring your backup in as a replacement. Again, make sure you save that tile before making the change. Another thing you could try, that did work for me, is to delete the tile all together. I did this and it wipes out everything in the tile. But it did work. When I did this it wiped out a whole city so I just went back to an earlier backup. So you have a couple of options there, I hope one of them works for you. There's another thing you might try. This is a new one on me but I saw a post where they say you can edit a world tile. Might be worth looking into. I got a switch in the middle of nowhere that's buried under a building that only shows the blue pole. I can't get rid of it. If I can edit that thing out of there, maybe the advanced rebuild will allow me to rebuild the route when something goes wrong.I answered your post over in the route forum and my suggestion is to minimize any objects on the tracks til after you got the main trackwork done. Sep-09-01, 06:06 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" Great suggestions ragmop. Someday when I have a lot of time I will try that delete tile and restore but which backup file do you use.... how far back do you go? If I delete the whole tile (I assume you mean the blue border full tile) will I have to restore it in the Route Geom. Extractor? For some strange reason all my attempts to delete individual paths in the player service window accomplish nothing because as soon as I exit the editor and then reenter... there they are again. I'm sure Jim Steven from MSTS has a logical (and expensive) fix for all these problems and a mathematical equation to make the job even more complicated. I'm tempted to just wait for TRAIMZ in December and run the portions of the route I have completed already. I know what you mean about track objects. The ones that seem to cause the most trouble are the mileposts with speed indications activated. I use the Japanese style because they come close to the prototype US road I'm modeling. They always seem to be the ones that cause the problem of corrupt files and out of sync to pop up. thanks for the help. Keep me posted on anything new you discover.

Sep-09-01, 08:43 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" Easiest way to fix it without deleting the activity is to edit the path, right click on the track and choose "remove start point". Then right click again and place a new start point. If you're just using an activity for playtesting a route under construction, place an end point just a little ways down so it's a short path. You can drive beyond the end point no problem, and the path logic don't pay any attention to any changes in track beyond the end point, so you can tear up and replace track at will beyond the end point without getting broken paths. Sep-09-01, 11:33 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" Great tip Jim... why didn't I think of that...short paths mean no problems further down the line.....NOW... how do I get rid of the old "broken path" activities without editing them all.....

Sep-09-01, 08:51 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" Really? J. mileposts causing trouble? Great, just great... and I was about to put them in. Well... when it comes to computer games, procrastination is your best friend. As far as your situation goes, I would take a break and come back to it. My original Number 11 route was a goner. It completely crashed and there was no hope for it. But, it was only a test route so no big deal. But I was able to recover it and that was nice. Sometimes you just need a step back and approach it after some rest. What I would do is if you got backups, then know you'll be able to restore your route. Chances are after you get back to where its working, you'll pickup right where you are like nothing happened. I've had to do that a couple of times. I've probably have about 20 backups of my route from different times. On my current route, Number 11 expanded, I had placed signals, and made a number of modifications. But the route screwed up and I wound up having to go back a number of backups. No biggie. Turns out better in the long run cause you seen it one way, you can make changes better knowing already what will happen. My first suggestion if going to get the route working involves some strenuous tweaking, is to just go back to a backup that works. Chances are you'll be able to move along alot faster without all the frustraton even though you're doing it over again. Been there. I do like building the routes best of all the things you can do in MSTS. Building activities is pretty neat too. Just know the day is coming when MSTS will work as good as MS flightsim an Combatsim. It'll come. Sooner hopefully than later! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-09-01, 11:39 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" When you do your backups do you leave some files out and only copy the tdb? It seems like a lot of space is consumed by copying and recopying the terrain and textures! I have one full backup copy of everything but I'd like to cut down on the file size for future backups. By the way, all the folders within my own Route are empty (except for the paths) .... so the editor must be getting the information from the sims root files. Is this unusual? Shouldn't my own route folders contain that information? I double checked again tonight and every one of them is empty except for the activities folder???? Weird. Where is the sim getting the info. specific to my route under construction?

Sep-10-01, 08:14 AM (EST) 10. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" Now that's the gosh darndest thing I've heard. All your route folders are empty?? How can this be? Do a recheck on that. Those files got to be somewhere. And then they need to be put back to where they belong if they're not. But I don't know how you could have set it to where the files are stored some place else. Maybe you're looking at the wrong route folder? Maybe you got two with similar names. For now, backing up won't help if we don't know where those files are. Sep-10-01, 07:07 PM (EST) 13. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" Happened to me again today.... Japanese mileposts cause fits with the editor especially when you activate the speed limit functions. The editor wants to delete them all when I cruise down the line looking for my starting point. When I enter the coords. and "JUMP" to the place I finished last night that does not happen... only when I slew down the line a warp speed (using the shift key)!

I know what you mean .. I've got a simple 100 meter straight track in the middle of nowhere that seemingly can't be deleted. I think that is why those two little renegade sections were left in Marias Pass .. Even Kuju couldn't get rid of them I don't feel so ignorant now! Sep-10-01, 11:42 AM (EST) 12. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" Oh yeah? Hmmm.. lemme ask you a question on this. Can you do an advanced rebuild? Every time I try now it stops in the same place giving me the blue screen of death... oops, I mean the send/don't send/ box of death. I thought the reason its doing that now is because of that phantom switch. You have any ideas? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-11-01, 11:48 AM (EST) 14. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" I guess I'm playing 'Russian Roulette' because I can't do a rebuild at all. Like yours, it stops in the same place everytime. That is why I keep a good set of backups, so I can replace the individual files as needed. Each time it crashes and will go no further, I figure which one(s) have the problem and simply replace them. The next time, it loads up beautifully and works fine until I do another 'screwup'. The funny thing is that it runs fine in the game. I definitely don't understand, but just trying to work with what we've got. In case you're wondering why I haven't shared this route .. I took one of the earlier downloaded routes and built another complete added line onto it and I'm sure the author wouldn't appreciate seeing this in public. I'm finally getting ready to put what I've learned in a new route built from scratch. Maybe months down the line .. Robert Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-11-01, 12:14 PM (EST) 15. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" Have not had the rebuild freeze up on me yet. How deep are you into the route? Namely, how complex has it become. I'm about 90 miles into a 126 mile route and I'm keeping my fingers crossed and not adding any track objects until my trackwork is done. I've learned my lesson the hard way.

Sep-12-01, 11:39 AM (EST) 16. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" Actually, what I did was take James Hunt's (I think) NewWorld and added another 46 mile mountain (goat) line anticipating getting a Shay to do some lumber & coal shuttling. James already had some fantastic scenery in it, so I just went from where the switch was about 5 miles East of London and went South & East from there. I noticed one of the world files was 698k which is a no-no, but seems to work. From what I've learned, I finally started my own route yesterday and am going to follow your (and most others) advice and get the trackwork done first before adding anything. It's hard, but I'm definitely having some fun. Just an opinion, but I think Microsoft pulled a brilliant move when they put this out like they did. If everything worked beautifully, people would get bored in a hurry .. as it is, most of us love a challenge and we surely have one here . Robert Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-12-01, 12:01 PM (EST) 17. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" I learned my lesson the hard way about signals, mileposts, etc. Since I stopped adding them to incomplete sections of my line I have had many, many fewer problems. The toughest part is orienting myself to completed sections and keeping track of the mileage. I've found a makeshift solution. I use a wooden telegraph pole at each mile point so I can keep running count of my miles. This is found under clutter in the US2 listing under wood pylon. Items are listed alphabetically so this item is near the bottom of the list. This helps me keep oriented since I know the station to station mileage from an old employees handbook and can some close to duplicating the track alignment.
Good luck. Keep me posted.

Sep-12-01, 12:42 PM (EST) 18. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" uh joe? telephone poles? Not to be an alarmist or anything, but aren't telephone poles having a problem reappearing after folks delete them? You might want to look into this. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-13-01, 04:45 PM (EST) 19. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" Haven't had a problem with them yet but I am using them very, very sparingly just to make station locations on my route and to keep running track of the mileage between stations. If I can not delete them later... thats okay....they don't take up much memory and actually look quite good enroute.

Sep-13-01, 07:25 PM (EST) 20. "RE: Broker Paths - Deleting" You can delete them later on... you have to go in and edit them out of th telephone.dat I believe. I just thought you might want to try using something else cause it seems you were having a bit of bad luck with msts. Just trying to save ya a little frustration.
