Jun-11-01, 10:49 PM (EST) "Switches: Good news for all!!!" Hello,I posted a message about these darn switches, creating activities, and the route editor yesterday. I want to thank all for their responses. And now for some good news. Yes, there are two different kinds of switches. In the route editor, I decided to poke around Marias Pass again. The switches controlled by the sim are labeled something like this:AltPnt10dLft.sThe other kind of switches are labeled nearly the same.AltPnt10dLftMnl.sI would venture to say that the (Mnl) means manual switch. I replace a switch in the new route that I've been messing with, and it works like a charm. All of the switches I had been using were the other kind. And so nothing worked without an extensive path leading the way. I'm more of a hands on person. And so I was getting very bent about not being able to throw the switches in the new route. Problem solved!!
Good luck to all, and I hope this solves a few route editor problems, and well as answers questions about those darned dispatchers that we thought were sleeping. The sim will not allow the AltPnt10dLft.s switches to be changed by the player.Have a great day!!Lonnie

Jun-12-01, 00:42 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Switches: Good news for all!!!" Awesome and great job figuring this out! At first my idea was that there was something in the route editor to change this. But after looking, I decided that it could not be in there and must be in the activity editor. So it was the route editor after all. Thanks for posting this up, I am quite sure it is going to help many people. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I wonder if changing mainline switches to manual, will effect the signal system. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-12-01, 09:31 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Switches: Good news for all!!!" That's a really good question. I haven't done anything with the signals yet. It is worth the try though. Good point to bring up, I haven't even gotten to thinking about the signalling system, I bet that promises to be a real joy.Lonnie

Jun-24-01, 02:30 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Switches: Good news for all!!!" Just build a single line section with signals and do a test! I haven't even started building a route yet. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-28-01, 10:33 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Switches: Good news for all!!!" Here is the procedure I use. It's probably not the most efficient. I hope I got everything right but be forewarned..use at your own risk.IN MODE WINDOW
Choose Select Object Mode (upper left icon)
IN GRAPHICS WINDOW
Click on switch in graphics screen to turn it into wire frame
Right click on wire frame to open properties box
Look in SHAPE FILE box and determine what type of switch (Rgt or Left, 5 or 10, etc)
Click OK in properties box
Press DEL key on keyboard to delete automatic switch
IN MODE WINDOW
Click on Placement Mode (upper right icon)
IN PLACEMENT WINDOW
Click MORE button
Choose Object class = Track sections
Scroll to choose proper replacement manual switch that matches the one you determined above except with MNL designation - double click on its name. This moves it to Placement window.
IN GRAPHICS WINDOW
Place WHITE X near point where lead track of switch will connect to existing track. (Usually this locates it properly but you may have to play around with it some)
IN MODE WINDOW
Choose SELECT OBJECT MODE again and click on terrain to change switch back to a graphics from a wire frame.Hope this helps Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-04-01, 11:22 AM (EST) 8. "RE: Switches: Good news for all!!!" This works great but it appears there is an 'auto' switch used heavily in Columbia Falls that has no corresponding manual counterpart, that being A1t45dYardRgt.sHave you found this to be the case? Is there a usable replacement, or a way to MAKE a manual switch? Any database files we can edit, etc.?Thanks to anyone who can unlock this mystery! Jul-09-01, 04:07 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Switches: Good news for all!!!" I had an interesting thing happen yesterday along these lines. Im' working on a central Indiana short line and had installed a passing siding using the 10pt left and right switches with corresponding endpoint track pieces. Then I discovered I'd ised the automatic instead of the manual version. Deleted the auto versions and replaced them with the manual ones, and now the two
Just for fun I then tried putting the auto switches back, and the damn alignment is STILL off by the same amount. Anybody else seen this? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-11-01, 06:55 PM (EST) 12. "RE: Switches: Good news for all!!!" One thing I've encountered is that to make points line up, you may need to experiment using either EndPnt Left and Right. Also try reversing them. What I mean is that if you start a siding with a left switch and then a right End Pnt to align the second track to be parallel, you have to use the same parts when merging the two tracks on the other end. (ie, End Pnt Left and End Pnt Right reversed seem the same, but they are not.)If you use the End Pnt Right and use the "T" key to just reverse it, I found the track's do not line up. I'm not 100% sure if you have to use the same pices, or opposite pices when merging.I hope this makes sense!Rick Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-04-01, 08:17 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Switches: Good news for all!!!" The Tract Section Codes subchapter from the Sybex book indicates:
"Mnl is a manual switch unction point, which means that you can control it in the game"."Pnt is a point (another name for a switch). They are often used in pairs...Points are used on the mainline because if manual control of these switches was allowed, the play could get into the path of a computer controlled train and cause the game to get stuck". Jul-08-01, 03:17 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Switches: Good news for all!!!" Unlike (sarcasm warning) when the computer controled train justs sits on the same track opposing you and never diverts to an appropriate route, and you can't throw a switch?? Or the AI train justs barrels head on into you, never trys to divert? Sure am glad they kept stupid me from diverting into those smart AI trains!
