Aug-22-01, 08:00 AM (EST) "Activity Design Questions" LAST EDITED ON Aug-22-01 AT 08:00 AM (EST)I had a play with the Activity editor for the first time last night and had some amount of success with it.What i'd like to do now is get a bit more adventurous and try my hand at creating some activities for the various loco's that i'm doing and others are doing for the UK scene.Bottom line:
What makes a good passenger activity?
what makes a good freight activity?ie. if you're reviewing an activity, what would make you say one activity was more enjoyable than another?I'm talking UK stock, Settle and Carlisle route (until others become available at any rate), so not much in the way of hills to worry about.Matt.

Aug-22-01, 12:55 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Activity Design Questions" Well, here's what I like in activities. (YMMV, and I am a Yank...)For passenger runs, I prefer some interaction with other traffic, riding yellows, or even just having other trains moving at a station when I pull in or out. Some of the standard NEC activities just seem to be "run your train down the track", with little AI traffic and green signals all the way. That may be what you want in real life, but it gets boring in a sim.For freight runs, I like switching (shunting). Road freights can be interesting in the same way as passenger runs, i.e. if there's some traffic around to liven things up, (although runor has it that MSTS has AU (artificially unintelligent) traffic that tends to botch things up pretty easily). But having some cars to move around and put where they belong is what I really like about the sim, (otherwise, I would have stuck with BVE; much more stable for pure driving, IMO).The pinnacle, for me, (and what I hope to work up to) would be to have a series of activities that start off where the last one left off, as if you really worked for the railway. Yesterday's setouts become today's pickups, there's work to do in the yard, trains to assemble from the coach yard and deliver to the station, etc. A complex day's work might be broken into separate activities, which wouldn't be too annoying to the player, and for folks like me who can only fit in 30 min to 1 hr of play at a time, might be a good point to take a break.Anyway, hope this helps, and of course, there are others who will want different things; hopefully they'll speak up.Regards,
Dave
