Jun-10-01, 06:08 PM (EST) "Fellow Activity Builders...A question to u all!!!" i recently downloaded several posted activities and during the unpackaging process i was prompted to overwrite several files. i did. both activities loaded and played well. no problem.
but, the next time i went into the activity editor to either open an existing activity or start a new activity on maria's pass a prompt told me to recopy a path file for longhaul east (summer).
here's my question. if i either make a new act. based on anexisting one or build a new one based on any of the existing lines, then the changes i make could very well affect your machines because the file imported into yours doesnt match what was there before.??
any ideas? one problem with the editor is that so many files go with the activity when we trade it around. and the package i might upload would not affect my files at all because there being upgraded within my machine. any thoughts??? Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-10-01, 09:17 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Fellow Activity Builders...A question to u all!!!" This is a very good question.. One Ive been wondering myself.
I used the "Long Haul East" as a starting point. I probably should have saved the changes as a different name but over looked it.
I wonder if another activity uses this path It could be very well buggered up !. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Fellow Activity Builders...A question to u all!!!" ult, i'm going to ask a guy ive been emailing regarding activity work. he first mentioned the situation to me last week. i think, and dont quote me yet but its because the originator, say me, sends changed files to you with unchanged files. not sure yet how to go around it. i'll get back here after i talk to him. that would be a major problem for trading. have you downloaded any that have caused u any trouble in the activity editor? Jun-11-01, 09:49 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Fellow Activity Builders...A question to u all!!!" hehe Yeah I dont want you messing up my default "long haul east"..Try this..1. Inside the 'service editor', with your modified 'long haul east' selected, click on the "use as template" button..2. Now it will want a new Filename & path display name(name that shows in choosing a path pulldown menu).3. Now you have a working copy of "long haul east" but named differently so you wont mess up users default path files..
Same can be done for consists..First few times I played with editor and looked at default paths and kept saving over them by accident too.. whooops.. :')

"modified"?hey bear, your answer helps me for one but brings up new questions for me. could you reply by going thru the steps for creating an activity that would avoid causing this problem.
i found that when i went to the cd and recopied that dreaded long haul path file, then the next time i went into the editor it said i needed to update the file. i'm sure because it was now "behind" the rest of the files. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-13-01, 01:53 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Fellow Activity Builders...A question to u all!!!" You need to use all new files for your activities. This includes new files for the following areas:activity file
player's service
player's consist
player's path
any placed consists
traffic
traffic consists
traffic pathsit's also a good idea to start each filename with the same first few letters so you can easily group and edit them. While the original activities weren't much to talk about, downloading two or more new activities based off one of the old ones could be disasterous.Ted Curphey

Jun-13-01, 07:48 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Fellow Activity Builders...A question to u all!!!" God as if this designer wasent convoluted enough.
Now if you dont remember to rename absolutly every article used in the new sceanario you could wreck someone elses fun.
Most of the over writes would be quite harmless for example a simple consist say a 10 car mixed. You make no changes to it so even if you over write the original its an exact duplicate and no harm would be done.
Routes on the other hand are another matter.
This snafu can occur wether its a "packaged" or zipped individual files.
