Jun-10-01, 11:26 AM (EST) "How to make the Activity Unpacker work" Or how I spent my summer vacation After a session with a friend I belive I have a way to make the Unpacker work for anyone.
The following assumes you are running Windows 98 and have a default install. If you dont have a default install Im sure you can figure out the changes necessary (wink).
I must give credit where credit is due and thanks too leemon for finding the key to this solution puzzle.I will try to spell this out in a step by step fashion.1. Open a folder with a packaged activity in it.
2. From the tool bar at the top of the folder select "View" then "Folder Options".
3. Select the "File Types" tab.
4. Scroll down the list of Registered file types untill you find "Packaged Activity".
5. Highlight the Packaged activity and press the Remove buttong. Dont let the warning box scare you were going to fix that in the next few steps.
6. Now select the "View" tab of the folder options.
7. Look under the Advanced settings for a check box labeled "Hide file extensions for known file types". Make sure this check box is NOT checked.
8. Click the okay button and you should be back at the folder.
9. Look in the folder contents for a file with the .apk extension and right click on it. Select the "open with" option.
10. The open with dialog box should open. Select the "Other" button.
11. Now navigate your way to "C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Train Simulator/Utils/tsunpack.exe". Highlight that and click okay. You will return to the open witih dialog box.
12. Press the Okay button of the open with dialog box. You will recive an error message stating the all too familiar "Failed to open package". Now dont cry were almost done. Click the okay button and you should return to the folder again.
13. Select from the folder tool bar "Views" then "Folder Options" and select the File Types Tab. Look familiar ? Good. There is one change though you will now find a listing for APK File.
14. Highlight that listing and press the "Edit" button.
15. In the Actions box high light the "open" and press the edit button. You should see "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\UTILS\tsunpack.exe" in the Application used to perform action box. If not lather rinse repeat (steps 1 through 14).
16. Now edit the listing in the App. used box and add the "%1" to the end. Dont forget the space. It should now read "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\UTILS\tsunpack.exe" "%1" press the okay button.
17. Press the close button for the edit file type box.
18. Press the close button for the Folder options box.
19. Now two click the .apk file. You should get a box that says "Unpackaged Activity to ..." Guess what ! It now works !I gotta post the usual disclaimer about not accepting responsibility for anything that may happen by performing the actions here in. Sigh, however this little excercise should be relitivly harmless. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Wazzit mean when I attempt to unpack the CSX intermodial K train.apk activity and I get a box that say's Microsoft Train Simulator activity unpackager with a message that say's failed to open package?I've dragged the apk to the tsunpack.exe, and when that failed copied the tsunpack.exe to the same folder that the apk is in with the same response.Maybe I'm having a "blond" moment?any help is appreciated. Jun-10-01, 07:03 PM (EST) 6. "RE: How to make the Activity Unpacker work" Thats the whole point of this message.
The unpacker doesent work as it comes with the game, nor does the "drag and drop" method described in the instructions.
Read that boring long post that started this thread maybe that will help. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-10-01, 10:03 PM (EST) 8. "RE: How to make the Activity Unpacker work" LAST EDITED ON Jun-10-01 AT 10:13 PM (EST)Actually I had read the boring post but the error message I had described in my previous post wasn't mentioned so I figured I couldn't even get to the part where I could use the tutorial.I'm familiar with the folder option menu too, unfortunately, Windows ME has appearantly found a "better way" of doing things so I can't do what's described without a huge amount of pain, not to mention risking changing the look of my folders which I went through great pains to get them to look as they do (Windows 95 style)
Actually, I've been tempted to revert to Windows 98 just because of the screwy stuff that ME does. This is just one more reason to do so.Thanks for your gentle reminder in your last post.Just wondering though..... would anyone mind much putting the unpacked act on a ftp site for downloading? Jun-16-01, 10:18 PM (EST) 31. "RE: How to make the Activity Unpacker work" If your experience was like mine with WIN-ME (after deleting the APK file type, and following the original instructions, I could not find a new APK file type), simply create a "new" file type, then edit the command line as follows:1. Open the folder with the new packaged activity in it.
2. From the tool bar at the top of the folder select "View" (WIN98) or "Tools" (WIN-ME) then "Folder Options".
3. Select the "File Types" tab.
4. Click on "New"
5. Click "Advanced"
6. In the "File Extension:" box type APK
7. Scroll down the Associated File Type:" drop-down menu and select "Packaged Activity".
8. Click "OK".
9. Scroll down the list of "Registered file types" untill you find "Packaged Activity" and click on it.
10. Click on the "Advanced" button at the bottom right.
11. Click on "Edit".
12. Click in the "Application used to perform action:" box (make sure the command line is NOT highlighted in blue) and move the cursor to the end of the line. Add a SPACE, and the characters "%1" (including the quotes), so the line now reads "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\Utils\TSUnpack.exe" "%1" (with all four " marks), where C: is the drive where MSTS is installed.
13. Click "OK", "OK", and "Close"
14. Click on the packaged activity to install and click on "Yes" to install. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-12-01, 10:17 AM (EST) 12. "RE: How to make the Activity Unpacker work" From my experience, and that of one of the contributors to this string, the described procedure DOES NOT WORK WITH WINDOWS ME.I might have suspected as much when the "Folder Options" choice was found not to be under "View", but under "Tools". At the end of the day, I still could not unpack the activity -- and had lost "Packaged Activity" as a Registered File Type. Not sure if this is fatal (can always reinstall WIN-ME, I suppose), but it may serve to wave off others until we have something that is assured to work across all OSs.Ironic, MS can't get their act together on something as critical as this to the enjoyment of what otherwise is a pretty neat game. (Just that two of us with this OS were having the same problem prompted me to think that was the cause.)Perhaps the problem is the file I was trying to open (CSX_Intermodal_K_Train1.apk from www.3dtrainstuff.com).I'll refresh my WIN-ME to restore the files I lost an try again.Jamie Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

This all seems too complicated. You would think that after Flight Sim they would realize that half the fun of these games is exchanging addons. Lets all hope MS gets its act together. The MS folks must know the train-fan/enthusiast population is probably 10x anal retentive compared to the flight-sim crowd. Pilot wannabes as detail-oriented. Rail fans are absolutely rabid! Jun-18-01, 04:36 PM (EST) 32. "RE: How to make the Activity Unpacker work - A Better Way?" If only... I origionally tried the top message instructions. I had the same problem as with everyone else. I have ME of course. On good old step 12, I couldn't find the file. So now I have gone to the ME version of the steps. Now I have made a new one and followed the steps exactly. I found everything that they said would be there. I went and clicked the file, and "Falied to open package" popped up. But, odd thing is, I took the file and dragged it to the program (TSUnpack.exe) and it worked! So now I am able to play that one normally. So then I went and downloaded a new one. I thought maybe that file was just screwed up and could do the drag and drop thing. I tried a new one. It didn't work. Oh well. So then I tried to drag and drop THAT one. NOPE! Someone PLEASE tell me what is going ON here!!!! Thank you! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-10-01, 02:11 PM (EST) 39. "RE: How to make the Activity Unpacker work - A Better Way?" I tried to use your instructions because the ones from the original message didn't work. In step 5 it says to click on the advanced button, but I don't see one. There is an edit button, so I clicked on it, but there was nothing inside to resemble the next steps. I have Windows 98. Please Help!

Jul-29-01, 02:33 PM (EST) 44. "RE: How to make the Activity Unpacker work - A Better Way?" The instructions I provided are for Windows ME -- NOT Windows 98, which should be addressed by the original instructions at the top of this string (I mean VERY TOP). I hope this helps clarify things and gets you up and running soon. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-23-01, 10:20 AM (EST) 34. "RE: How to make the Activity Unpacker work" Apparently TSUnpack is a bit temperamental when it comes to parsing its filename argument. When run from the command line on my ME system, TSUnpack is able to resolve a filename delimited by double quotes like so: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\UTILS>tsunpack "c:\somepath\csx_intermodal_k_train1.apk"Unzipping the APK file to the UTILS directory and defaulting the path to the current subdirectory works as well:C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\UTILS>tsunpack "csx_intermodal_k_train1.apk"If you don’t mind using the “MS-DOS Prompt”, this is a quick and easy alternative to altering the Desktop's file associations.

"RE: How to make the Activity Unpacker work" I've also got a Win98 system and ran it under the command line in dos as mentioned above...C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\UTILS>tsunpack "csx_intermodal_k_train1.apk"This seems to have done the trick. I actually got it to unpack. Now I'm going to see if I can play it.Empire builder, here I come! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-10-01, 01:46 PM (EST) 38. "RE: How to make the Activity Unpacker work" I have Windows 98 and I was ok until I had to right click on the .apk file. When I clicked Open With..., my computer kept opening Quick View Plus. So I tried navigating to where it says, but under utils, all I have is a Ffedit folder. I'm lost and now I don't have that Packaged Activity directory. Please help.

Jul-30-01, 06:23 AM (EST) 47. "RE: How to make the Activity Unpacker work" I had the same problem with the WIN2000 OS. The simular steps for that OS did NOT solve the problem, but ....
I looked in the registry for entries of TRSunpack and lo and behold in the "open/shell" command was the full path for the unpack utillity with "|" behind it. When I changed that to "%1" it all worked. Someone who knowes how it works for Win98 can maybe make a registry extraction for that entry and make that available.Willem van den Dries
