Aug-09-01, 01:12 PM (EST) "BAD BAD BAD" Well another reinstall of MSTS because another activity designer failed to tell you all the additional add-on cars and locomotives that were required. WHY can't activity designers tell you in the read files what equipment is needed and where to download it from. As an example, a CDN Grain Car????? Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-09-01, 07:09 PM (EST) 4. "RE: BAD BAD BAD" i've learned my lesson. 3 or 4 installs and a hd reformat and recover. i dont download any activity, thats ANY unless the designer has included unpack and install notes including a disclaimer that their work has been tested for no overwites and no install bugs. period.
and what seems somewhat incredible is that the boards are full of user-unpack problem posts and serious designers who are warning of the difficulties and still people are posting activities with no notes and altered files that they dont even take the time and make the effort to rename. Aug-09-01, 07:08 PM (EST) 3. "RE: BAD BAD BAD" I don't see any reason to re-install either. The errors drive me up the wall because there's no easy way to tell which consist file is calling for the car/engine that I don't have set up exactly the way that it wants. The only way that I've found to fix the problem is to go through the consists one by one with a text editor until I find the problem child. It's frustrating, but it seems to be the nature of the beast that we're dealling with -- and it beats re-installing the whole game. Too bad the game wasn't set up to tell a person which consist is having a problem. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-10-01, 01:28 AM (EST) 6. "RE: BAD BAD BAD" As I said originally, No info in any file about needing other cars until the error messages appear. One Empire Builder activity called for a CDN Grain car. I have searched this site and others and can't find it. I would rather uninstall and get these bad activities off my machine. Otherwise you end up with a bunch of unused, worthless files. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-10-01, 12:52 PM (EST) 8. "RE: BAD BAD BAD" K heres what you need to do,Reinstall the game again,BUT,Now make backups of all your default Consists and a backup of
all of the files Activities ( from all 6 folders )These files are small, and when somthing goes wrong, you can just re-install the default activities for the route that is causing you problems. When the sim first came out I must have re-installed 5 times the first week. Then I got smart about it. I still uninstall / Scan Disk & Defrag Re-Install / once every 2 weeks , BUT that is just to keep the sim running smooth. So Make Backups & say good bye to pointless re-installationsTim Kent

Aug-10-01, 02:39 PM (EST) 9. "RE: BAD BAD BAD" PeeWeeAce,
You don't have to do another MSTS Install. Just copy down the error message, and if it contains lack of equipment, just go to the trainsim sight and look in the appropriate file until you find an identical match to the wording of the error; download and install. The error message wuill be gone the next time you run MSTS. In your case, there are two cars missing. They are both found on trainsim. I encoutered the same probblem.Alex

Aug-13-01, 11:12 AM (EST) 10. "RE: BAD BAD BAD" This is a good example of what I am talking about. The error message refers to a "CDN Grain Car"...so I search for it. Now I am told that it is a Canadian Gov't. Grain Hopper Car. How do you get "CDN" out of this? It would have been simpler if the activity designer would have told us exactly what we needed in a read file. What a waste of time. DON'T PUT THEM ON ANY SITE UNLESS YOU DEFINE YOUR ACTIVITY. PLEASE. Aug-13-01, 01:48 PM (EST) 11. "RE: BAD BAD BAD" One thing to do is to print out the text file before unpacking the Activity. If threre are items to download, down load them first then unpack the Activity. If you don't want to down load the extras, just close out the Zip file and the Actvity is not added to your PC.Alex Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-14-01, 11:18 AM (EST) 12. "RE: BAD BAD BAD" The problem with that is, most of these activities don't have a text file or if they do they don't mention the additional items needed to run the activity. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-14-01, 01:06 PM (EST) 13. "RE: BAD BAD BAD" NEVER unpack an activity that does not document the cars and engines it needs to run. You are playing with fire otherwise. When I download activities, I unzip and find the readme file. I then decide whether to unpack based on the extent of new downloads I will need. If there is no readme, I would simply delete the zip and any unzipped files. Where do you find activities without documentation, anyway? I don't recall seeing any in the usual places I look. I know some documentation is not very good, but I can't recall downloading a single activity that did not supply some kind of info, whether very good, good, bad or indifferent.
