Aug-05-01, 10:28 AM (EST) "dissapearing consist fix" If you can't see the consists in the 2D view you do not need to re-install. Here is what I did tonight to get them back. I cannot test it again until the problem re-surfaces but I am fairly sure the fix is repeatable.I suspected that some of the settings for the activity editor were becoming corrupt. As the consists did not come back after re-starting the AE, even after re-booting the computer, I thought that there must be a file somewhere that the AE uses to store its settings. I searched the train sim directory for the most recently changed files after making some changes to the AE settings and guess what? None of the files had changed in the last day.I went trolling through the registry next. I found the section where train sim keeps its data and deleted all the keys starting with 'AE_'. Hoping that when re-started the AE would detect the lack of previous settings and generate defaults for itself. It worked!! All the settings were reset, and the consists came back to the 2D view.If you have the same problem here are the steps to follow. Condensed.- Run regedit. (Start->Run-> type in 'regedit' then press OK)- Search the registry for HWRenderer. (Ctrl-F in the regedit window, then type in 'HWRenderer' in the search field, I search only for keys). It will take some time to find it during which the regedit window does not change at all, there is no progress indicator.- When HWRenderer is found, on the right window pane click on the first entry starting with 'AE_', then hold the shift key and click on the last entry starting with 'AE_'. All the 'AE_' entries should be selected. Release the shift key. Press the 'Delete' key and delete all the entries.- Start the activity editor.- Load an activity and ensure that view->service info is checked.- Select tools->verify starting state- The consist should appear in the 2D view.I don't know why the name of the registry section is 'HWRenderer' but there you go. You can save your copy of the registry, or just the affected section before performing the above steps if you feel a little unsure.I hope this works for all of you.The above are the demented ramblings on of my evil twin brother and I cannot be held accountable if your following of the above steps leads to any kind of catastrophe, including you having to re-install train-sim, which was what you were trying to avoid in the first place but would probably ended up having to do anyway so what have you lost? Aug-05-01, 11:34 AM (EST) 1. "RE: dissapearing consist fix" Hello Oldbeamer,I looked in the registry and by the look and feel of it I think you have come up with a very good sugestion! For a time i suspected that the answer for the dissapearing must be in the registry but at that moment I could not find where.
So I reinstalled the game. Next time I am following your lead!Good work, thanks a lot.Nightrider Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-05-01, 01:42 PM (EST) 2. "RE: dissapearing consist fix" I thought I fixed the problem with a re-install, but after only a few minutes, the player service and consists disappeared again and are not showing in other activities, nor can I place any consists in a new activity. I'm not into regedit, and even if I did go in and fix the registry settings without screwing up my 'puter, what's to stop the same thing from happening again?I've about had it with the activity editor...I gave up on the route editor long ago. I may just have to rely on you folks here to keep posting activities to keep this thing fresh. Without activity creation capability, this sim could get old real fast.Bring on Trainz! Aug-06-01, 07:25 PM (EST) 3. "RE: dissapearing consist fix" Here's what happened after I deleted the AE keys...editor worked fine for about ten minutes, then when I went to do an action event, I clicked on pick up cars, got the box that said select your pickup and clicked, and just like that the map went blank again. Back to regedit and sure enough all the AE keys were back in there.Any permanent fix to this? I'm on the verge of trying a reinstall. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-07-01, 08:26 AM (EST) 4. "RE: dissapearing consist fix" The AE keys will always re-appear when the AE re-starts. The trick is that when the AE puts its keys back it puts in default ones which have not been corrupted. The consists are still there in my installation and its been a couple of days.I can understand how you would get frustrated if the consists dissapear every ten minutes. At least its better than re-installing, right? Can you determine EXACTLY what steps make them dissapear for you? A REPEATABLE bug is a lot easier to report and fix! Aug-07-01, 09:57 AM (EST) 5. "RE: dissapearing consist fix" I too had the same experience. The only time I lost the 2D consist is when I edit the action event. In my case it was to pick up two car's in Columbia Falls. I didn't have a chance to test anything else such as placing additional static traffic, dropping off cars or changing ending of activity. The activity works perfectly if I don't make any changes??? Also I noticed even though the 2D consist will disappear in AE, when you start the activity they do appear in the proper location within the activity. I hope someone out there has an idea how to get around this since doing a reg edit (yes this does work ) it is a real pain to do it each time you want to make a change in AE. Aug-07-01, 08:03 PM (EST) 6. "RE: dissapearing consist fix" I lose it when I click "add" after choosing pickup, setout or other action event from the combo box that appears when you click new. Everything is fine until I get the pop-up that says "select a car" or "select a pickup." When I click, player service and static consists disappear. I finally finished an activity I'd been working on for several days, after running regedit about a dozen times. The last thing I did, which seemed to work, was to delete only the registry key AE_Normalview. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-13-01, 02:04 AM (EST) 7. "RE: dissapearing consist fix" I guess my problem is similar to what is being described here. When I want to test my new activity and go to "TIME" and "PLAY", zilch appears and zilch moves. I am reinstalling right now just for general purposes and to clean garbage out of the activity folder (yes, my trains are backed up).If you have Norton Utilities, one feature is Registry Tracker. When I get started again, I'll turn this on and see if I can identify some of the patterns described above. If somebody produced an accurate Activity Editor manual for $20, I'd buy it in a minute. But bugs come up faster than one person can write!ron

Aug-13-01, 09:44 AM (EST) 8. "RE: Perhaps a consist fix" On Aug-07-01, 08:03 PM (EST)flarrfan posted a message that what he did was go into regedit found the entry 'HWRenderer' and only deleted the key AE_Normalview leaving the rest of the keys alone that start with AE_.I tried this last night and it WORKED!! I did several edits on my activity that were causing the consist to disappear and had no more problems. I didn't need to do any more regedits.I didn't have a chance to see after doing the edits what happened with the AE_ keys but it sure beats doing a delete on the keys everytime when wanting to do edits on an activity. Give it a try.

Aug-13-01, 05:50 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Perhaps a consist fix" This morning I created two test activities while watching the Register Tracker. Went in and out of the editor and to the actual simulator (where I promptly uncoupled since I had just reloaded MSTS and hadn't put in the patches, yet). The AE_normalview value changed several times but the consist never disappeared. I'll keep monitoring until I determine what a "bad" value is... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
