Aug-04-01, 01:20 PM (EST) "Creating activities" I have a problem with creating new activities for my MSTS game. I have figured out how to make a consist and all that.....but how do i go about making it perform actions....I.E. setouts and pickups. I tried a tutorial i downloaded, but it is completely baffling me on how to do this. And i also need to know how to add AI trains to a new activity as well. Can anyone pleasee help me out with this?

Aug-06-01, 02:50 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Creating activities" To add AI tins to your activities - go to the traffic tool(?) bottom right of the screen. Click on new -give it a name - then click on edit - create services, paths, and consists the same way you'd create player ones, then select them from the drop down menu and use the insert service (or use this service I think) button. Type in the time you want it to start and off you go!!Hope this helps,Cheers,Bill Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-08-01, 07:59 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Creating activities" Cool, thanks Bill. Now i just need to figure out how to make trains perform setouts an pickups within a new activity. I've tried and tried but i just can't seem to make it work when creating a new activity. I guess i must not be very bright when it comes to programming new things.

Aug-08-01, 10:40 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Creating activities" First, if you plan to share your activities with others, NEVER use the Edit button to change anything. Always click Use as Template and let the program give it a new name.Second, pickups and setouts are done with Action Events. You need to have a player consist and static consists showing on the map. Go to Window and click Action Events, then follow the prompts. To see the player consist, make sure you go to Tools and click Verify Start State. Third, read the Tutorial and read it again until you understand it. Find the Sybex book if you can. The two chapters on Activities are worth the price. Two downloaded tutorials and the book taught me the basics and the regulars here helped answer some remaining questions. Aug-10-01, 07:21 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Creating activities" Thanks alot for the help. Maybe now I can create some great uploads for new activities when i get them made. After that, I want to try my hand at creating a route, much more complicated i know. I want to do the BNSF Chicago to Kansas City route, both divisions. My grandfather ran the chilicothe division years ago before the merger, so i want to create that route when i can get the time. I hope others will be interested in this as well!!!

Aug-13-01, 08:03 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Creating activities" If a designer uses "Edit" instead of "Template" is this why we get the message "xyz exists, overwrite it?" when installing the activity? If I understand correctly, then your suggestion is something that cannot be emphasized too much, because ignoring your advice would mean that other activities might not work as originally planned. Is that correct? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-07-01, 04:59 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Creating activities" Well i have tried and tried, but to no avail. I guess i must be the dumbest one here when it comes to creating activities. I used to be good at this kind of stuff but with the trainsim activity creator.....it has ruined any inteligence i had. I guess i will have to go back to model railroading.Rich Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-07-01, 07:36 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Creating activities" With all due respect to the gentlemen above may I suggest a course of action directly suited to your needs. So far the response has been positive for those who read my tutorial I wrote for Abacus. I'm not talking my freeware version which is fine, but it wasn't meant for beginners. The one for Abacus is a total rewrite, plenty of pictures and explainations; it covers the aspects of activity creation you having difficulty with and the price is right. Most of what you experience in the activity editor is not intuitive. Once you understand it, then it makes sense. Getting to that point is the trick. Give this tutorial a chance and it's not hard to find me, let me know how you make out.www.edmfamily.com/msts/index.htmRich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-10-01, 05:57 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Creating activities" Just a quick word of praise for Rich Garbers Activity Editor Tutorial. I bought it, and it has helped explain a lot of the intricacies of the editor.
It was worth the $10.00.

Dec-11-01, 12:36 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Creating activities" I have not yet purchased Rich Garbers tutorial from abacus yet (fully intend to though).... but about 6 months ago I knew next to nothing about the activity editor and how to create activities, but even with just his "free" tutorial I was able to quickly grasp the basic concepts and now I am the author of several fairly successful activities posted here at trainsim.com (I am the author of the Port Odgen and Northern Coppertrain, BNSF tanktrain and several soon to be released activities) so I can certainly vouch for Rich Garbers talent for explaining the activity editor and creation process and making it relativiely easy. I would suggest purchasing his tutorial and with a little patience you'll be writing your own kewl activities in no timeLonghairedwizard Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I don't think that this is necessarily true. I just posted a question about this a few minutes ago. If you use default consists in your activity (without editing them) and then "package" the activity in the activity editor, the packaged activity then includes these default consists. When you un-pack the activity, you get the "xyz exists, overwrite it?" question. If you say yes, it just overwrites it with the same old file.I was wondering if there was a way to prevent the packaged activity from having these default consists in them.Steve
