RE: Probelm With Downgrade Activity

Two things you can do, one, listen if they have sound. If they have no sound and are on an AI train, they're player locos, two, find that consist, pinpoint those locos and go to Conbuilder and find if it says AI or Player.-Andy the LRC lover

A much bigger problem with that activity is that none of the locos seem to have brakes... I am sure it is highly realistic when you have loco brakes, train brakes and dynamic brakes all set to 100% and the train's speed is STILL inreasing... (NOT!)

It is possible to have all the brakes on at 100% and the train continues to gain speed down an incline, especially with snow or rain. In such situation, you must take off the dynamic brakes and put the loco/s in reverse and increase the speed--a last ditch measure. If this stops the train, you can then maintain control using brakes or using the reverse traction.

RE: Probelm With Downgrade Activity

HiIn real life, I think that action would get you fired after you blew all the breakers and possibly traction motors in the loco(s).As far as I know the older diesels were very unforgiving for an action like trying to apply power in the reverse direction (while still moving). The motors would probably arc-over and that's it, traction motor(s) and possibly generator replacement time. From the GP7 and F7 manuals I quote, "The reverse lever must be moved ONLY when the locomotive is standing still". The word "ONLY" is one of the few words in all-capitals (other than labels) in the manual - probably for a reason.GaryG

>GaryG Too true....in the older units, if you were caught doing that, it would be dismissal for sure; and with the new Macs, you can't do that as the computer will not reverse the traction motors while moving in the other direction. I think what you need is to be aware of the grades and start braking and dynamics ahead of time. It sounds like you are already going down the grade before you set up for it. A good rule of thumb is to be in dynamics BEFORE topping the grade, letting the train force push you over the hump, then make a 10 pound reduction when about 1/3 of your train crests the hill. Remember to sand when in full dynamics as wheel slip will reduce effort.

RE: Probelm With Downgrade Activity

In real life, if you have a train running down a steep grade and you can't control it with the dynamic, locomotive, train and emergency brakes, you do whatever is necessary to stop the train. It is true that proper control prior to runaway would alleviate the need for reversing motors, but the queston remains as to what to do after the proper control has been bypassed.
