RE: Amtrak on the East River (Pokey) ???

Nearly all Amtrak route miles in that area are on CSX routes. Amtrak runs on other routes however do occur and can be justfied as detours or special trains. Be Seeing you.

RE: Amtrak on the East River (Pokey) ???

John,
Amtrak DID run over the N&W starting in 1975 with a train called the "Mountaineer" that ran from Norfolk, VA to Chicago, IL by connecting in Ashland, KY with the "Cardinal". The orginal train usually ran with an SDP40F and 4 or 5 cars (depending on what was available in Chicago). The usual consist was: 1-2 coaches, dome-coach (with frosted over lexan in the dome so you couldn't see out), diner, 10-6 sleeper, and a baggage car (usually an ex-SCL baggage-dorm). After the great freeze of '76-77, that killed a lot of steam heated equipment, the train resorted to a GE P30CH or F40, an Amfleet coach and an Amfleet Amcafe. During 1977, the train was rerouted to Washington, DC and lost it's western connection with the Cardinal. Thus the train went to nowhere and died in the 1979 Amtrak Train-Offs.Schedule-wise, the EB train left Bluefield, WV around 9AM and the WB train left around 9:30-10PM. Very close to the schedule of the old N&W "Pocahontas".I hope this helps.
