Jun-08-01, 05:41 AM (EST) "Throwing Switches" Has anyone had problems at times where a switch just won't throw? For example, in the activity I just finished creating when I get the train to Columbia Falls and start to back in towards the loading dock, I can't throw that switch. I can't drop of the cars that need to be dropped off at the loading dock because I can't switch into the bumper track. I am not sure why it don't allow me to throw switches at times. Anyone have any ideas about this? Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-08-01, 06:59 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Throwing Switches" If the switch is a "manual" type, most often used in yards, then you can control it to your heart's content even in an Activity. You can tell if it's manu because it will have a visible switch lever.Unfortunately, many of the switches in the game are controlled by the dispatcher AI. The only way to get those switches to work (and you CAN'T control them no matter what you do) is to make a reverse down that spur part of the player path in your activity.Supposedly: set a "reverse point" in your path, right click on the switch and set it so that the path goes down the correct way through the switch -- the dispatcher will then throw the switch for you.NOW THE BAD NEWS...
Unfortunately, it looks like a lot of them are broken. I've been complaining about the Columbia Glue Spur switch. It works fine in Explore mode, but there is *nothing* you can go in an activity to get the computer to let you back down it. It will never throw the switch for you.I haven't tried that particular switch. Good Luck!Lee Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-08-01, 02:43 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Throwing Switches" Just had an idea, but I'm not in a position to try it myself now. Is "explore route" an activity? If so, is it possible to add traffic to that activity? Would that give us unlimited ability to throw switches while still having other traffic on the line? Just a thought, don't know if it's possible. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-08-01, 04:19 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Throwing Switches" Thanks for the advice! I am going to pull up the route editor and look into this. I can't see why that loading dock switch would not be manual, but I am going to find out. I will also check on the glue spur switch. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Throwing Switches" LAST EDITED ON Jun-19-01 AT 10:54 AM (EST)It's possible that the development team didn't have time to create all the necessary pieces to make it work right. Keep in mind the is Version 1.0. You can imagine working with Windows Version 1.! For instance, I couldn't get into the Columbia Falls Gas Spur, and upon examination with the Route Editor, I determined that the switch is an AI version (file name: Alt45dYardRgt.s), and there is no corresponding manual version in the Track Section library (probably would be named Alt45dYardRgtMnl.s). It's a matter of finding a manual switch that will fit and relaying the track to match the manual switch geometry. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-02-01, 07:01 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Throwing Switches" Actually, MS did provide a 45 deg. yard right manual switch shape file, but for some reason it's not included in the track section index file. I think the shape file itself may be malformed because you can't lay it using the Route Editor when it is added to the index. I've found that you can still have a manual version of this switch if you add the index entry yourself and instead reference the shape file for the "automatic" version.
