I'm sure this has been addressed before, but a search didn't turn up an answer. Tonight, after using MSTS for nearly two years, my AE has decided it is going to crash as soon as I start to build an activity. Trying to start a new player service or placing a consist, etc. will cause the "phone home" screen to appear. I've tried reboots, different routes, etc., etc. with no luck. I've checked all kinds of things (consists, etc.) with various add-on utilities (i.e., ConBuilder, RouteRiter, etc.) and found no errors. Interestingly, MSTS seems to run existing activities or Explore Route OK.I've done a lot of minor modifications to MSTS that have not previously caused any problems, so I would like to avoid a re-install (I do have a recent backup of MSTS, hopefully without whatever the problem is now), so any suggestions would be appreciated. All this just confirms for me what a worthless piece of crap the MSTS Activity Editor really is. Cumbersome, unstable, poorly designed, inadequate--all are descriptions that come to mind. I've used a lot very complex programs for both business and pleasure over the years. The AE is without doubt one of worst-designed I have ever seen. Microsoft should be ashamed to let a program like this go unrepaired. If it isn't fixed in MSTS2, I won't buy MSTS2! They should have patched it on MSTS1 long ago!As I said, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

RE: Activity Editor crash

I haven't added any engines or cars, but I have been modifying some, using Shape File Manager, ConBuilder, etc. I have also been editing some with Unicode. That said, I have tested them all with ConBuilder and found no significant errors. I have also loaded them in Explore Route with no problem. The other thing I did yesterday was to modify some sunrise/sunset, moonrise/moonset times some of my environments. I'm testing those to see if that caused a problem. The ones I modified I ran in Explore Route mode and they ran fine.I'm still running tests. Thanks for the advice, I'll keep looking.

RE: Activity Editor crash

I just had a 72 hour marathon with this sort of problem. Kevarc is
quite close to the possible source of trbl. After nearly blowing up MSTS and rebuilding several time I found:...a recently added AI engine whos file name did not agree with two of the three wag/eng description names in the code text. Its my own fault, I wasn't paying attention to details. cost me most of a weekend. This sort of thing will bring the editor to its knees, and often it will not kick in until several runs of the editor later. Route-Riter did not detect it; Route Control was totally faked out. It hides like a rat in the woodwork.Ways to find it: 1. back up your individual route folders
2. eliminate one of them from MSTS.
3. run editor again. error again? go to step 2.
4. editor runs ok -problem is associated with eng/wag file
from most recently eliminated route. 5. go thru associated eng files then wag files for that route.
it should be a result of a fairly recent change/addition
somewhere. Thats how I found it. Best wishes,

Yardlimit

RE: Activity Editor crash

AI eng files drove me nuts. There are 3 places that the name (Wagon and engine lines) that must match EXACTLY the file name. It will crash out without any error message. Luckily the first time I did it, I knew exactly what file I had edited and was able to fix it up right away.Kevin Arceneaux
