I am no longer able to get the "playback" to work properly in the AE. This is the feature that shows your train and AI trains as circles moving along the track. When I run it, the circles are not displayed, although if I look closely I can see the signals changing from green to red as the train progresses. Did I inadvertently turn off or deselect some option, or...?All help appreciated.

RE: AE playback problem

It sounds like you have an AE problem. Search for an AE registry problem in the forums and you will find a number of hits. Most likely your static consists also have disappeared and for the same reason. I don't remember the thread or I would send you to it. Maybe it was under missing consist, anyway there is a fix. I had the problem and the registry was at fault.onerailrat

RE: AE playback problem

I found the thread you were referring to and it says to delete the values from an AE registry file (IIRC, "Normal Route").Although I treat registries as holy temples and do not tread in such places, I did manage to find the appropriate registry file. How do you delete the value? Dare you do so?...and yes, my consists don't show up either anymore.fwbryan

RE: AE playback problem

In this same section (Activities Discussion) under a thread titled "invisible consists", I posted how to reset the Activity Editor by change the value of AE_NORMAL_VIEW. That will also fix your problem. If you want to delete the "AE_" entries, that will also fix your problem. To do that, left-click on the first "AE_" entry, then hold down the shift key and left-click on the bottom "AE_" entry to highlight the whole group. Then RIGHT-CLICK on the highlighted area, and chose the DELETE option from the popup menu.I used the "changing one value" method because it was easier when I had to reset AE a few months ago. In either case, you MUST REBOOT your system after changing or deleting the entries for the results to take affect.

RE: AE playback problem

Thanks for the come back, but this has not been my day. Yesterday MSTS ran fine. Today I ran ConBuilder to check my files and it found 5 critical errors, which I fixed. CB then found no critical errors, but MSTS won't load. I've gone back and reinstated the errors, still won't load. If only it would give me a hint of what the problem was, instead of the "Send-Don't Send" insult. To the present AE problem: I figured "MUST REBOOT" was the "A Ha". I went into the TrainSimulator/1.0/HWRenderer file (aka "holy temple") and deleted the AE_Normal_View line. Then I rebooted and tried to load the Editor. It crashed, before even asking for the program selection (AE, RE, etc.). I went back in HWRenderer and deleted all the AE_ files, following your instructions. Rebooted again, same result.I am at wit's end. I've spent 6 hours today trying to fix things, 0 hours operating trains. Please help if you can. E-mail is fwbryan@fidnet.com if that is more convenient.Frank

RE: AE playback problem

Something to try...several people have mentioned similar things when activities have messed up consists or reference engines with really bad ENG files. Since you mentioned Conbuilder found 5 critical errors and you made changes, there may be activites referencing these engines. A good utility to find these types of errors is Route Control (Lite). It is available in the TrainSim file library or you can download it from the author's site at:http://www.howintheworld.com/downloads.shtmlWhat you get is the program with only the CHECKUP feature enable. You have to register it to get the rest. The CHECKUP feature is what you want to run. It will remove bad consist and flag activities with errors.Other than that, I don't have a clue.

RE: AE playback problem

Thanks for the come back. I downloaded Route Control Lite and cleaned up what it found. Per RCL I have a clean slate, and nothing in Consist Builder that wasn't there when the program was working. But MSTS still crashes near or at the end of the loading procedure (about 10 seconds into the dark screen). Like you, I haven't a clue at this point (about 8 hours of work since it first crashed) but I do have some bad thoughts about MSTS/Kuju.Frank

RE: AE playback problem

Frank,One other thing to try to eliminate the problem especially if it related to a route (activities, tracks, services, messed up files, etc) is to remove the routes one at a time. Each route has its own folder under the ROUTES folder which is in the Microsoft Train Simulater folder. You can make a complete copy of the entire route folder (ex. Cajon Pass) in a new temporary place (not under the ROUTES folder) and then delete the folder under ROUTES. Do them one at a time and do the add-on ones first rather than the MS supplied one. By removing the route folder, you also remove activities, service, traffic, paths, and some other routes specific files. That won't delete consists, engines, or cars/wagons but it doesn't sound like the problem is with them based on Route Control Lite and ConBuilder.Dudley

RE: AE playback problem

I tried that on your suggestion, and had all the routes except the European and Japanese ones (which I haven't used in months) in a temp file and it still crashed. Then I reinstalled MSTS (for the first time) after moving my trains and other valuables to a temp file outside of Train Simulator. (I wasn't sure whether the reinstallation would delete everything and start from scratch; apparently it only overwrites.)And now I can't even get the MS/Kuju logo to display! Ctrl-Alt-Del shows not responding, and message after ending gives an informative "<unknown> crashed for <unknown> reasons...". The spiral continues downward, 2 days and 12 hours into trying to fix it. Frank

Frank, I may be jumping in unwanted but I've had similar problems a couple of times in the past. In fact, yesterday I messed some things up trying to change tsection.dat to get a route to work. The solution took about 30 minutes and some playing around if you have the hard disk space.Rename your Trainsim folder to TSOriginal or something else: put CD 1 in and reinstall. After it is reinstalled, run it and make sure it works before putting your addons in (1 at a time) to see where the problem is.The only downside is .. you have to change your options when you first run TS to match what you had before.Just an idea if you haven't tried it

RE: AE playback problem

Thanks for your help. I've since uninstalled and reinstalled MSTS with no results. I noticed someone on the MSTS Discussion Forum was having the same problem, so I've posted a message there in his thread. My guess it is something in the registry or other dark innards of the system. But what, and how fix?Frank
