How to get an AI train to pass the player's train from behind...(without the need for any reverse/backing manuevers). Demo activity included!!!These screenshots should be self explanatory...There is also a demo activity (using all default rolling stock) avialable by clicking on the link after the screengrabs.Mini-Tutorial from LHW – image 1Mini-Tutorial from LHW – image 2Mini-Tutorial from LHW – image 3Mini-Tutorial from LHW – image 4Mini-Tutorial from LHW – image 5Mini-Tutorial from LHW – image 6Mini-Tutorial from LHW – image 7Mini-Tutorial from LHW – image 8Here is the link for the Demo activity from which the above screenshots were taken. You must have the EastMetro deluxe route (by Rich Garber) installed to use this Demo activity. This activity doesn't use an .APK file since my activity packager refuses to work for the East metro route, so you can either drag the "program files" folder onto the drive where your msts is located or manully install them. (If you drag and drop, just select "yes to all" when prompted as it will only add to your program files and not actually overwrite anything.)

Hey, Wizard, this is great for routes like Metro North and WV&O with short sidings, but probably won't work on MP3, KHP or upcoming Sandpatch. We will need to stick to back in/reverse moves for passing trains.

RE: Mini-Tutorial from LHW.....

Hey LHWYes, I downloaded EMRR and yr activity, and YES, it does WORK !!!
But when trying to apply on a different Route, no way...
Passing train longer than siding, OK. Messing around with start times, changing start points, changing engines, total failure...What I dont understand is WHY the Player SEES RED on your siding : he has nothing running in front, no station stop, no visible waiting point ! How can the AI behind pinch his path ? In all my attempts, the player sees GREEN, and the AI follows gently. Is there s'thing hidden ? A passing path?Another funny thing: in one of my attempts my player train stopped at a station without reason, then restarted. Still, the superlong AI stayed behind.LHW, I think we need to decompile this flogging Automatic Dispatcher in order to UNDERSTAND what the Rules of the Magics really are !!!Love + PeaceOldieDaddyLove and Peace

OOPS...

LAST EDITED ON Jul-01-02 AT 05:47 PM (EDT)

Well, after being convinced by the VCR, I run it in "real". I drove rather slowly, about 10 mn late . The critical siding was indeed announced by YELLOW, miles ahead, the entrance signal was YELLOW, and the siding exit signal RED, as expected... until the last car freed the entrance switch. Then I saw GREEN , and proceeded without stopping and without having been overtaken. I wondered whether the AI train had vanished, and pulled back. The AI train was just slowly stopping at the siding exit behind me, look yourself :Mini-Tutorial from LHW – image 11Well, what happened ? does anybody UNDERSTAND the Logic of the Dispatcher ? Obviously in the VCR it acts differently. Let's hope for a more user-friendly and bugfree MSTSv.2 soonLove and Peace

RE: OOPS...

Actually, the fact that you were 10min late may have had an adverse affect. It has worked for me in the game when I get there mostly doing the speed limit. In fact I have gotten a train to pass the player on another area on the east metro, so I didnt think it was a fluke. I tried this technigue on the KHP, but was also unable to get it to work....I asked rich garber (author of the east metro) about the signaling techniques he used, but so far we havent identified any factors to either allow or disallow this technique to work. I have some other alternatives to having to pull past a siding and back in to get the AI train to pass the player and I will write another demo activity with screengrabs to demonstrate. (these still require a slight reverse move but hopefully will seem a little more prototypical that having a train completely pass a siding, then reverse into it).LHW

RE: OOPS...

Thanks for your exciting work, LHW !
Actually, when I did it successfully on Schwarzwald-NeuMurg at Schwarzenbach station(unfortunately this forum vanished during redisigning the site), I had just to reverse for a few meters, no more.
And the overtaker was no longer than the siding, but the player had a longer station stop.
Mysteries of the Dispatcher's mood...Love and Peace

Click to send message via ICQ

Will this technique work if you want more than one train pass the player from behind? I was thinking of making an activity where the player is either an MOW train or a low priority bulk freight train.Joe
