I have been able to (to some varying degree) start a simulation and during the course of running an activity actually switch from one locomotive to another (dash9 to sw1200 for switching). Has anyone else been able to do this. If so then I'd like to know your technique and share it with each other.

RE: Switching locomotives during SIM run

Wonder how you managed this. The only way I could think of is start with 2 engines from the start, and uncouple one when it is inactive.
Could add a lot of spice to activities !!!Love and Peace

Hi. Its tricky and complicated but not impossible. You switch yourself to the drivers seat of another locomotive. I'll post details as soon as I perfect the method.

If this is possible than I assume it is done by editing the consist files and the activity files after they are created. This just goes to show that MTS had potential from the start.Edward K.

RE: Switching locomotives during SIM run

There is one person who probably did quite a lot with MTS and that person was Jim Steven. If anyone remembers, he was working for Microsoft as a developer during the time he was posting here. Some of his last posts concerning activities mentioned about AI trains coming in and dropping off cars. He evidently had the connections. It is too bad that he did not pass along this information to us. There is probably a lot more we can do, we just do not know the secrets. At the time he was posting here, he was working on a highly detailed route.Edward K.

RE: Switching locomotives during SIM run

Part of the process involves creating a "ghost" locomotive with your real locomotive and switching it when you want. But you must first save the game and change over then reenter the game and you will be in the "ghost" locomotive at that point on.

Yes, to "Switch" locos, that is what you have to do... I knew it wouldn't do it in game, because that is impossible, but the way you worded it, it sounded like it.

RE: Switching locomotives during SIM run

To make sure that everyone understands how and what I mean. Consider this.... I am able to start an activity and run it. I am able to save the activity at some point. Then I exit the program. Then I switch the locomotive in the file consist. Then I can reenter the program and resume my activity where I left of with the new locomotive I have chosen. It does work most of the time. Yes it would be great if there was a simple command to switch from one locomotive to another locomotive. Unfortunately MSTS does not have this feature so we must find ways around it. In the activity, the locomotive you are in technically is the same locomotive you started with except that you have modified your consist. When you restart the simulation the new locomotive you chose is the one you will be in. The old one is replaced with the new one. That is how it is done.

Usually, any changes made to an activity will cause the "saved" game not to load. Even if it worked all the time, I'm afraid it would'nt be very practical..... I beleive what most people are talking about is switching to a cab on an entirely different train....(not possible)...or ...switching to the trailing locomotives cab for reverse moves. It IS possible, however, to change to the trailing cab in the game(without saving, changing your consist, and restarting.....)Your engine consist must have at least 2 diesels...the lead diesel must NOT have a "5" Key cabview but the trailing one needs to have this....then, when you need to travel in reverse for an extended period of time, you can hit the "5" key to simulate the engineer moving from the lead cab to the trailing cab.....of course you won't have a working control panel or "dashboard" in front of you, but you can do just as well with the F5 display (which shows throttle and brake settings) and of course your track monitor....but you will have the rear facing view from the trailing unit's cab!!!PS-even if you have a caboose or passenger car with a 5 key cabview, the engine with the "5" key cabview will take precedence over any other.Longhairedwizard
