I have this point where the same tracks show up differently on topo and aerial. The tracks have not changed any. Which is closer? THe one I chose for my marker I mean. Thanks! METRAUP

You realy need both.Use Topo first. But you might need to download Aerial in some places...http://groups.msn.com/MSTSNarrowGauge Jonathan Lewis jonathanmlewis@msn.com
Like Jonathan said: You really need both. The topo's are often outdated, which is a plus for those of us with "classic" tastes in routes. However, the aerials in USAPM can be enlarged to where 1 pixel = 1 meter. Best you can do with topo's is 1 pixel = 7 meters. The additional accuracy of aerials for marker placement is a no-brainer in my books. So, I use the aerials to place my markers, and the topo's to determine where older trackage ran, using the lats/longs from the topo's to place the markers on the aerials, adjusting for accuracy as needed/practical. I also find that I keep both types of maps open, and refer back and forth. Good luck and have fun.Andre Ming
I agree with andreTopo's can give you a good idea where the track goes, but aerials give you much better accuracy. I use aerials most the time but topo's come in handy. I had a section of track that was hidden in the shadow of trees. I just put the marker on the topo and all was good. Nick
Keep in mind the following:1) The topo maps are 'usually' a composite of structures that have existed over a long stretch in time. For example, they will show serveral pieces of trackage, but part of them may have been torn up in the past as part of building the rest that you can see.2) The sattelite or aireal shots are a single snapshot in time, and at most with show the scars of past construction/destruction. Sometimes it is difficult to determine actual track presence on what would otherwise appear to be a dirt road.Martyn T. Griffin griffinmt@mindspring.com http://www.geocities.com/tcmrrc/
