Another look at Columbia Gorge – image 1

Today we are in the little village of Mosier on the Oregon side of the Columbia River about 5 miles east of Hood River. Hood River is the phase 1 end of line on the Oregon side.Mosier is a very small town. The train doesn't stop here but there is a freeway interchange! There is a school, one gas station, one grocry store, and about 30-40 homes. In these pictures, the large 3-story red/white Enocell building is temporary. That is the location of the Mosier school which is currently under construction.Another look at Columbia Gorge – image 2Another look at Columbia Gorge – image 3Another look at Columbia Gorge – image 4Another look at Columbia Gorge – image 5Another look at Columbia Gorge – image 6Cal Rasmussen

RE: Another look at Columbia Gorge

Lookin' good, Cal. Eager anticipation is the phrase. I forget: Will your new route tie in at any point with currently available routes in the BNSF MOntana or Northwest Divisions? Bing

Hi Bing, The BNSF side of my route goes east as far as the tunnel about a mile east of Wishram. The only connections (not developed, yet) are the Oregon Trunk which heads south from the Celilo Bridge and the Mt. Hood Railroad branch which heads south out of Hood River.Cal Rasmussen

That picture with the overpass is kind of misleading. The road crossing over the top makes a 90 degree curve to the left and continues eastbound. Another road branches off at the bottom of the curve and curves back under the the bridge and continues up the hill westbound headed for a junction with the Historic Columbia River Highway.I think I can answer your question regarding joining two routes. For all practical purposes, it can't be done. However, there is nothing stopping you from adding on to an existing route. If you do that with one of the add-on routes, you'll need to get permission from the original creator to distribute the extended route.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Another look at Columbia Gorge

Did not refer to "adding" anything to a route. Tieing in operations from one route to another. Done all the time. End to end operations. Sweetgrass to Shelby. MP31 Shelby to WHitefish - a gap - Kootenai Sub, I forget where it starts. Sandpoint? ANd so on. Bing

Cal, it's getting close. I'm impressed with your stick-to-it-no matter what comes what may attitude . Seems like a long time since you talked about, then started the Columbia Gorge. I'm still watching from the side-lines here. Great job, bud!Timtimmuir@wcn.net

RE: Another look at Columbia Gorge

Mickoo - Would be nice if it were practical. It COULD theoretically be done; splicing two routes together. Might require an IBM mainframe to run it, however. I've read of attempts to do this, so far as I know they did not work well, for a number or reasons beyond just the file size. I'm not a route designer, can't chew gum and read a newspaper at the same time, quite frankly. I admire and respect anyone that can go into R.E. day after day, live with it, and come out with something that looks good and runs trains without crashing the sim. Just as frankly, there are not many people that CAN, from what I have seen. Most of the freeware routes I install don't stay on the hard drive, very few actually. Some of the payware don't either, but that situation seems to be getting better. Takes time to learn the software. I haven't had the time to start an end-to-end for the MOntana and Northwest BNSF Divisions. Maybe later this summer.Has anyone done a survey to determine what we lack in trackage from, say, Fort Benton west? Bing
