LAST EDITED ON Jun-15-03 AT 06:07 PM (EDT)

The problem with this area is the fact the topo doesn't show the DSP&P south of Newett. That old RR Grade that crosses Hwy 24 south of Newett and runs East/West on the north side of the Hwy is the CM grade. Hopefully the pics below will clarify things for you.
(Red is CM, Blue is DSP&P)
Edit:
BTW Jonathon, if you want to PM me your e-mail address, I could put together some better shots of this and e-mail them to you. Also I am planning on being down in this area this week. I can send you some pics and GPS coordinates if you would like them. I am going down there to do that for my CM route. It wouldn't be any trouble at all, seeing as they were damn near right on top of each other through this area.

Will do Jonathon. I will try to get down there this week and get some good pics. Getting down there won't be a problem. The problem comes in trying to keep me away from all the fishing holes down there. DSP&PRR route mapping help needed – image 15
I should probably leave the fishing pole at home or I won't get anything done!!

RE: DSP&PRR route mapping help needed...

Matt_G:When you're in that area, be very careful to see if the older hiways/roads use the former alignment of the rails in question. In that last topo, it looks as if the road could very well be on the old roadbed alignment. I've seen this over and over with abandoned railroads.BTW, what program is that you're using, and where did you find such large topos?Andre

Jonathan:I have and use USAPhotoMaps, but the topos it downloads are no where near that large scale. The ones at Topozone are also smaller in detail than that the above examples too. Where are you getting the detailed topos? Perhaps it's just an optical illusion.Andre

Andre,
In many spots along the CM the highways are built along the old grade. Your right about that in the pics I posted. In fact that DSP&P grade south of the highway but north of Trout Creek is a dirt road/jeep trail now. I love it when that is the case because it makes it so much easier to find. From Basalt east the road to Ruedi reservoir is the old CM grade as well as from Nast all the way to Ivanhoe Lake. I was up in that area last week but I couldn't get to Ivanhoe yet. Still to much snow even for a four wheel drive. As far as USAPM is concerned you should be getting that resolution of maps. Have you zoomed in all the way? Hit the page down key to zoom in and page up to zoom out. Those pics I posted are at the max resolution of the topos which is 4 meters per pixel. You can go to 1 meter per pixel on the aerial photos. Remember that they're are 2 types of aerials that can be downloaded. 1 to 8 meter resolution and then 8 to 64 meter (per pixel) resolution. Say you have a blank page with it set on photo. If you hit zoom out till you are at 8 meter per pixel resolution you will have tons of little blank squares.. Hit it again and the resolution stays at 8 but the squares get quite large. Those are the Big Jpegs which you don't really want.
