I've located the 90 meter SRTM data USGS has for all of North & South America. Its not on the Seamless site yet, but its fairly easy to use.The data is on the SRTM FTP server at: ftp://edcsgs9.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/srtm/Select the directory for the area of interest (North or South America) and download the zips for the relvant quads (1 degree square)You'll also need a program which will convert the hgt format files contained in the zips. Download 3Dem V1.69 from: http://www.visualizationsoftware.com/3dem/downloads.htmlOpen the hgt files with 3Dem and save as Geotiff's for use with DEMEX.
90m is far from optimal, but much better than anything previously available for outside the US. Personally, given the choice between using this and hand-digitizing from topos it would be a tough call but I'd probably go with the SRTM data.

RE: New DEM source for Canada & South America

Hi John,Thanks for the heads up!Unfortunately though, the BC Rail route I am working on crosses not only 1 but 2 large lines in the RGE (i.e. I had been getting 2 white voids that were pretty much linked together) so I have had to start again and displace the whole route 2 degrees east and 2 degrees south (somewhat like what the creators of the Florida Funnel had to do). Under 'datum shift' in DEMEX, would it even accept that substantial a displacement/shift? If not, that would be ok as in the "tracing program" you had referred to you can make the terrain progressively less accurate as you move a good 4 km away from the tracks (in other words just increase the contour intervals). But not to worry.. I'll still be using your program to extract DM's from terraformed terrain.. cdntrains

no, the datum shift won't handle that kind of offset. Probably easiest would be to save the data as USGS ASCII DEMs (an option in 3Dem), then manually edit the header entry for the corners - effectively shifting the DEM's.

RE: New DEM source for Canada & South America

Thanks John,I was searching DEM of this precision for my route since six months.
You made my day. I tried it. It works with USGS ASCII DEMs save option of 3Dem.
I then loaded in DEMEX and "Voila!" Robert Fontaine
