On the CA&E I laid tracks for interchange and crossing lines long enough for a rather long AI freight train to be generated with out suddenly appearing out of thin air and sufficent room for said freight train to disapear from sight.
So pretty much I'd lay about a mile/mile and a half but only wory about being acurate within whats visible on your main.
Remember though when you do the C&NW/J crossing remember to include the BNSF crossing the J about a 150' south of the C&NW at West Chicago.Gary S

It's been almost a year since I was out there(last June UP Challenger)but the BN rails were still intact connecting to the C&NW and continuing southwest towards Aurora just the diamond itself had been removed I'm assuming since you mentioned the track ripped up that since then BNSF has scrapped the line further.Gary S

RE: How far up the EJE?

At the C&NW/J crossing there is a street crossing with a side street coming in from the south of the C&NW and west of the J the side street then crosses the J and ends in a cul de sac if you stood at southern most part of the cul de sac the rails were probably 50' further south, the home owner on the south side of the track had scavanged some ties and balast dug up from the diamond removal to build a crossing to get his riding mower over the track to cut the grass.
If you explore some of the side streets west of there you might find rails still in the street but the track generaly ran in a southwest direction to Batavia where they turned south towards Aurora,I would assume that the tracks may have only been scrapped back as far as the factories several blocks west of the J.
I'll have to go back into my photo collection as 10 15 years ago I was exploring the area and noticed some old looking crossbucks and turned down that street to find an old semaphore signal as I got out to photograph the old interlocker signal I heard an air horn it turned out that the BN had been working the branch with a transfer run from Eola to West Chicago and was returning to Eola with a former Frisco GP38-2 a tank car and caboose as the engineer approached and saw me with a camera he flipped on the units mars light and gave a wave.I suppose the BNSF merger rendered the Eola/West Chicago transfer runs redundent.NW
Didn't ride photoed outbound Saturday at Elmhurst, inbound at Highland Park, and then Sunday inbound at Elmhurst then chased out to West ChicagoGary S

I see! I have also seen that signal. Thought it had been there a long time! I was amazed to see it in 1999 Aerial as tracks! I get what you're saying. Thanks!

Then you know where the BN/J xing was as the crossing was 3 or 4 steets east of that signal.
Apparently the semaphore was used as a permanent approach(blade& roundel permantly giving a yellow aspect) signal for the searchlight at the J xing though when I photographed it there were still a few shards of the yellow roundel in the frame(nothing left of the green or red if they were ever installed) and the blade was just bare and very weathered wood.
it almost looked as though the lamp was lit but it was hard to confirm as the sun was low enough in the west to have given the effect of illumination.Gary S

RE: How far up the EJE?

Dave, when they upgraded the line, they put a singal block signal before the diamond. There is also one where the abandond road crossing is just south of the UP. It's on and stays red. If you are lookin north from the UP/J xing, the track that goes left is the track that leads to West Chiacgo Yard, the UP one.The other half comes from the northern most track in the yard on the east side. Then it hooks around to the J yard.Later NW 1218 LONG LIVE THE F40C!

RE: How far up the EJE?

metraup,I live in the NW suburbs of Chicago. I am (from school) looking out my classroom and I see the Elgin Joliet & Eastern RR. It runs right through the town I live in. When I get home the tracks are 1/2 mile from my home.I do live near the tracks and I can tell you that in the evening there is 1 freight that goes through. On a rare occacion Metra uses the track for passenger service. I live in Lake Zurich and UP-NW line runs in Barrington (about a 10 minute drive with speeding) from here.Dave H.

RE: How far up the EJE?

Like I said Metra is "thinking" about having commuter service on the line from Barrington to Waukegan(ish). I don't know how becuase it is single track from here to who knows. The EJE has a x-over (cross-over) in Barrington the connects the UPNW line to EJE. Metra uses that portion of the line for "dummy" testing. I know this becuase there was an article in the paper some time ago so that might change. During school today I saw 2 freights. One unit coal train and another with mixed freight.Sorry about the confusion.Dave H.

Yep an honest to gosh semaphore, the searchlight signals you saw were most likely right at the J/BN crossing the semaphore was 3 to 4 sidestreets west of that locale,it was located on the southwest corner of the crossing and if I remember correctly there were factories just west of the homes on that street so if you go looking for it if you hit the industrial area you've gone too far.(if it's still there)
I went looking for the pics I took years ago, couldn't find the print but I did find the negetives so I'll be getting reprints done so I can scan em in and post them.Gary S
