High CPU Utilization When Using Route Editor – image 1

I just started using Route Editor for the 1st time yesterday, I have seen post in the forum relating to Route Editor crashing at any point designing/developing routes, I learned that when Route Editor is running it really taxes your CPU.My System specs are PC Clone 1.8GHz Intel Celeron, 512MB of RAM, nVidia GeForce 4 MX 420 64 MB DDR Video Card. I know that there are complex mathematical calculations, i still don't think that this program should be utilizing 99% Processor Time, I don't know if it ha anything to do with the fact that the Celeron Processor doesn't have FPU which is the only difference between that and it's P4 equivelant, here's a screenshot, is there a patch for this I have installed the update.P RobinsonHigh CPU Utilization When Using Route Editor – image 2

RE: High CPU Utilization When Using Route Editor

That is actually fairly normal for 3d games. It's trying to draw as many frames as possible so you get less jerky movement. However, rather than thrash the processor constantly, it should only take up most of the *available* processor time (ie what's left after other apps take their share), rather than *all* of it. FWIW on Windows XP, 1.8GHz Athlon, I also get 98-99% processor usage. A Celeron (also called celery because of its lack of anything meaty) chip will be slower than a P4, although your 3d card should be doing most of the 3d stuff. The route editor crashing is just poor programming (ever heard of exception handlers Kuju?).Geoff M.

You don't say which OS you're using or what other apps are running the background. As a rule the terrain editor wouldn't be placing as high a demand on your system's resources as when you're running the sim and your system specs are more than adequate.

Your right as as rule of thumb it should be the other way around, when you play the sim I can see the Processor having some Utilization cause of the fact that frames are being processed, AI trains, signals, all of this is going on in the background, but in the Editor everything is in a static state, just the tools and the program itself which is running in RAM. I'm running W2K and only using 122MB of RAM out of 512 there are no other Apps running except for Drivers and System Services all which are only taking up 122 MB of RAM you can see it in the second link in my 1st post, it's not a good picture though but clear enough.

RE: High CPU Utilization When Using Route Editor

One possibile cause is that RE is a 16 bit app and you are running Win2k not Win3.1 or 98. 16bit selectors get used up extremely quickly when doing any kind of terrain editing.

RE: High CPU Utilization When Using Route Editor

Well Intel Celerons are weak processors. Ther are as strong as the Pentium processors so thats why it might be taking up a lot of the cpu usage. I have a AMD Athlon 2100+XP which is 1.7Ghz and the cpu usage is aorund 60%. 512MB of ram is standard nower days so i think that is not too bad. I have 768MB ram and i can run a few other programs while on train sim route editor.anton

RE: High CPU Utilization When Using Route Editor

Yes, the route editor should be slightly less than the main program. But the fact that you're not moving around and everything is static does *not* mean that the processor is idle, far from it. It's still got to draw all those frames a second, very processor intensive.Geoff M.

RE: High CPU Utilization When Using Route Editor

well you could have a lot of Programs running in the background that is hogging up the Processor, and even at that the Processor you have lacks for MSTSRobert Steskal

maybe I be building another one soon, with better specs this one has 1.8 GHz Celeron 64 MB VGA Card and 512 MB of RAM that should be plenty but the new one I build will alot better this was just a project of mine.
