Great looking route, Jonathan. That looks like the old roundhouse at Como (in better shape of course). I used to snoop around that area in the 1970s when I lived in Denver, a short drive away. The old roundhouse had seen better days.
I don't know how familiar you are with Gunnison...but there was a hotel in town called the La Veta Hotel....the train used to go right to the front door. I think it would be cool if you looked up some pics of it. In it's time, it was the grandest hotel in Colorado. Back before Denver was the capitol, it was planned for Gunnison to be the state capitol. The upper floors of the hotel were destroyed by fire a ways back. The remaining ground floor eventually became low rent trashy apartment, those of which burned down a few years ago. Also, I drive between Denver and Gunnison for work...and I drive past the Como round house. If you head your route that way..I could get you some pictures to help show how it looks now. The Le Veta Hotel was on another line just north of the DSP&PRR. I have layed the track up that line and I Hope to place that Hotel. Also I am realy just laying the DSP&PRR tracks in Gunnison. I have placed all the D&RG tracks as far as the rooundhouse but that is as far I will go.I hope to go North-East in the next verison and I hope one day to though Como and into Leadville.http://groups.msn.com/MSTSNarrowGauge Jonathan Lewis jonathanmlewis@msn.com
I know it doesn't really fit, and it is DRGW trackage. But north out of Gunnison to the coal mines of Crested Butte would be cool. I was born and raised there. Growing up, we played in what was left of the facilities at these mines, that our grandfathers worked in as kids. Also, the original freight depot still exists in town. The water tower, caught fire, and was saved some years ago. It has been dismantled, and stored away with the hopes of putting it back up some day. Also, the track bed is still visible between Gunnison and Crested Butte. My Grandpa used to ride the train to Gunnison with the family to get stocked up with the home essentials for CB. It was a long trip, and you had to spend the night in Gunnison. I know it doesn't fit, but if you are looking for something to do after this project, Running coal to Pueblo would be fun!
I was thinking of laying track north of Guniosn to Crested Butte maybe in the next verison.http://groups.msn.com/MSTSNarrowGauge Jonathan Lewis jonathanmlewis@msn.com
