Where there's Fire, there should be smoke! – image 1

I recently downloaded a stack of burning pallets with animated flames. It looks really good, especially if you imbed three or four of them in a pile of scrap wood. The only problem is that there is no smoke.Has anyone come up with a way to make smoke come out of a static object. In an activity, one could place a locomotive under the fire as a loose consist or AI train but that would not work in explore mode. I think we need an animated smoke object to go with animated fire!Cal Rasmussen

RE: Where there's Fire, there should be smoke!

I believe I read in this Forum about making a static object, like a house or caboose, and calling it a diesel, so as tohave smoke come out the chimney.

Hi Cal,Sea View 4 has animated smoke. Since I didn't make it, I don't have permission to release it. As soon as SV4 is released, the smoke will be available for everyone. Bill Burnett

hey cal, where did you get these burning pallettes?I'm curious to compare the animation with my animated flare stack from my refinery objects pack....(I've been planning to update the flame effect on the second refinery pack which will be out in a month or so)Longhairedwizard

RE: Where there's Fire, there should be smoke!

Hi Cal,It should be possible to make an animated shape in 3D Canvas with a smoke texture which would waft back and forth. However I have not tried it. I have the burning pallets, and will see if I can create something this weekend.Mike

Bill, In my opinion, your flare stack is more realistic than the burning pallets. I believe I downloaded the burning pallets from uktrainsim.com.Bill Burnett

Hi Mike,
That looks the guy standing there is blowing cigarette smoke. I doesn't look anything like the column of smoke that would rise from an open fire. Bill Burnett's smoke has the same problem. It is not realistic at all.I am wondering about doing something with transparent, inverted cones and cylinders with realistic looking smoke painted on them. How many frames of animation does 3D Canvas allow. I think it would take a sequence of 20-40 frames to make it look realistic. Since I am just getting started with 3DC I am not familiar with the animation capabilites. In TSM, the animation speed is determined by the number of frames and by system speed and tile density. Is it the same in 3DC?

RE: Where there's Fire, there should be smoke!

Hi Cal,Yes, I agree, that fire sends up puffs of smoke, would be useful for a Wild West route for signal fires.3DC can use up to 1000 animation keys at between 1 and 30 keys per second, so it should be possible to come up with something which looks like a moving column of smoke. I only did the above to show that it is feasible to make animated smoke. With 3DC you need to have a fixed object, I just used a small flattened cube called 'Main' which is your pivot point and placed on the ground. (This can have transparent texture so is invisible). I then just animated a flat transparent rectangle with smoke texture to move up a few metres from the base object. The texture file smokemain.ace in the Global\Textures folder should do as a start for you.Mike

RE: Where there's Fire, there should be smoke!

Thats a great annimation, but they don't look like pallets to me, more like ties, and if they had been treated (creosoate) they would surely smoke alot. Remember when railroads were allowed to burn old ties along their rights of way??

I would really like to see something like locomotive smoke if someone can figure out how to tap into that routine. In an activity, I can put a locomotive directly under the fire and get the smoke but that won't work in explore mode.Cal Rasmussen
