Aug-03-01, 12:54 PM (EST) "Hudson River Valley - WLR - Help wanted - Will build route for food!" I'm doing a short section, 25km, of the WLR between Peekskill and Storm King/Beacon and would like to correspond/message with someone ( or more than one) familiar with that section of the river. I have some photos/postcards and such but need some first hand knowledge of that area. I have a burner so there is defiantly a new route in it for those who participate/help.I don't want to get crazy about the details, like getting 'farmer Johnson's dead apple tree next to the line outside Peekskill' modeled correctly, but I want to make sure about the 'look and feel' of the area is correct. I haven't been there since I was a kid in the mid-50's and my memory is a bit dim ( as I am at times! ).The TILES are generated and MARKERS laid in, thanks to John Stanford & Wes Downs and their wonderful extractor and converter.Ready to lay some rail! Talk to me!David

Go to terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com, search for the city of your choice, select USGS Aerial photos, and zoom in on your track. You will see every feature that is bigger than a square meter. All buildings, all trees, all cows...even Farmer John's moonshine still. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-04-01, 07:17 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Hudson River Valley - WLR - Help wanted - Will build route for food!" That area is one of my favorite places to ride my motorcycles.Bear Mtn. has one of the best views around. The Hudson, the Bear Mtn. Bridge,Amtrak and Metro-North on the east bank and CSX on the west.A trip on Amtrak up the Hudson makes for a very scenic ride.I've got some photos from a ride on the Turbo-Train but I don't have a scanner. Aug-04-01, 08:02 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Hudson River Valley - WLR - Help wanted - Will build route for food!" I worked at Helen Hayes Hospital in Haverstraw (sounds like a song from a gilbert and sullivan play) on the west bank! One of the most vivid memories is being in the cafeteria there early on a winter's morning, and seeing the Hudson with the sunn rising over it. Wow!Btw I beleive there was passenger service on the west bank too at one time (historians? am I right?) - those CSX tracks run through some really poor areas esp. near Haverstraw and New City.Let me know how it works out. I can provide you with detailed memories of the CSX tracks for a coupl-mile stretch, anyway. And just where do those tracks end up after Stony Point. Aug-05-01, 03:33 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Hudson River Valley - WLR - Help wanted - Will build route for food!" Bruce, et al, I'm having trouble with the line on the west bank at Storm King. The terraserver shots I use were taken in the late afternoon and the whole east side of the mountain where the rails are is in dark shadow. The question is: any tunnels? On the opposite bank at the base of Breakneck there is a tunnel so this makes me wonder. Any help. Anyone else with specific knowledge on the area don't be bashful, jump in! NEED HELP FAST, RAIL CREW IS IDLE AND STARTING TO DRINK, CAROUSE AND GENERALLY RAISE HELL AROUND TOWN. GOT TO GET THEM BACK TO WORK SOON!Thanks, David 'All Aboard!' Aug-05-01, 04:50 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Hudson River Valley - WLR - Help wanted - Will build route for food!" Hi all!
Just wanted to add a little info for you...
The tracks go along Sand Island, which was an old Navy facility during WWII, and then skirt along the river on a trestle as they cut thru Bear Mtn State Park and under the Bear Mtn bridge. The areas it goes thru in Haverstraw aren't exactly affluent, but by no means slums. Once it gets south of Haverstraw it goeas thru Clarkstown (Valley Cottage/Congers/West Nyack) and continues thru Orangeburg towards the New Jersey line.I live about a mile from the line in New City, Rockland county, New York, and have spent many a glorious afternoon railfanning the area with my 6 year old son. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions...Mike Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-05-01, 05:53 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Hudson River Valley - WLR - Help wanted - Will build route for food!" Thanks Mike, I'll ask more questions for sure. Here are a few shots on the east bank above Peekskill. I haven't changed any ground textures yet and it's VERY EARLY DAYS yet but...Just cruisin' up the Hudson with a good head of steam!

Looking North from the east bank, up river from Peekskill.
