For my route, Denver to Tabernash (90% trackage complete, 75% yards), I need to know how Amtrak backs into Denver Union station. I think I know how from the west (ie eastbound) but not when coming from Chicago. Can anybody enlighten me? It might involve putting back a wye that I previously cut short because MSTS kept getting lost with it...ThanksGeoff M.

Unfortunately its been a LONG time since I've rode on amtrak, but I think its the wye that is north of the depot in the BN yard. Its between the first and second bridge north of the station.Good Luck

RE: Amtrak in Denver

http://www.bnsf.com/about_bnsf/assets/images/div_pr.pdf
is the BNSF map of the area. could also try mapquest, or terraserver
as I recall the station had 4 tracks that were tied together on the SW end and a bumper before Cherry Creek. I think the trains would pull into the station, then when the people were off, the train would be y'ed, backed in, pick up people, then head out to Salt lake... but its been a while. The Y (I think) is part of the BNSF engine shops there. If all else fails, go to a rockies game tixs cant be more than $100 now
(that was probably a big help)....... MattAmtrak in Denver – image 2

RE: Amtrak in Denver

As of last November when I rode the CZ they backed into the station going either east or westbound. What the track topology that supports those movements is I cannot say but it is definitely near the BNSF loco terminal and shops. At no time during the week I was in Denver the previous November did the CZ head into the spur. The morning westbound backed in just like the evening eastbound. They drop off and pickup mail cars for/from the post office, which is at the far end of the station spur, before allowing passengers off the train or in the area. When last I saw the eastbound CZ there were no mail/express cars tacked on to the end so things may have changed since the beginning of the year.Richard

RE: Amtrak in Denver

I lived in Denver until about 3 years ago. At that time, both eastbound and west bound Amtrak trains backed into the station. There is a track which is part of the Y which runs from the N/S mainline (Old BN) to the old DRGW Westbound Mainline. That leg of the Y joins the leg to the Depot just about where they cross the river.Sparkie

RE: Amtrak in Denver

REally can't add anything. The first and last time (so far) that I rode the CZ was in 1984. Then they used a wye at the north end of the Depot, and from what I recall, the backup move wasn't very far, perhaps 1/2 mile or so.For any that are interested in what happens to the Sunset Ltd. in Jacksonville, I can tell you all about that.J. RE: Amtrak in Denver

See the attached graphic. The movements depicted are the arrival moves as all trains back-in to Denver Union Station. The EB CZ approaches from the upper left (in yellow) and after crossing the Platte River bridge turns north at the crossing toward 31st Yard where it proceeds thru a couple sets of crossovers. It backs into into the station after passing the former coach yard and current engine storage yard. The WB (in orange) uses the tracks in reverse, arriving from Chicago thru the 31st St Yard takes the right switch before the crossing, crosses over the bridge to Prospect Junction until the rear of the train clears. It then backs into the station. Photo courtesy of Terraserver.

RE: Amtrak in Denver

Nail,Tabernash is west on the old DRGW. It is actually north of Winter Park about 10 or 12 miles, between Winter Park and Grand Lake. There used to be a "Y" and some section buildings. I believe helpers were cut off after the climb to Moffet Tunnel. It has been 4 or 5 years since I was up there so I can't say what the situation is now.Sparkie

http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=39.99361&lon=-105.8425you can do it by going to topozone.com and typing "tabernash" into the search.>It has been 4 or 5 years since I was up there so I can't say what >the situation is now.No more helpers, everything is DPU's now. With the exception that BNSF sometimes helps their trains up the moffat. The ski train turns around on the "y" you mentioned. Other than that its just another siding along a busy mainline. Nick
