MSTS Tree Editor – image 1

Does anyone know anything about the MSTS Tree Editor that just showed up in the file library? It looks like a useful tool for analyzing MSTS file structures but I am wondering if it could also be a precursor to a decompiling tool. I haven't downloaded and tried it, yet, since I'm at work. I will look at it tonight.Cal Rasmussen

Hi,It looks like a very useful and handy tool, as you can edit eng and wag files as a tree and as a text file. Here is a screenshot:

Personally I like it, you could say it was a precursor to a decompiler but i dont think that it does much more than notepad except arrange everything in a treeThis utility gets my vote as being a great addition to the utilities we already have and i have nothing bad to say about itAlso i have been playing a bit - dont use it on large .ref files - but i tried it with the signal config files and OHHHHH MAN that makes it much easier to work withJason Webb

Ok i can Honestly say this program is a godsend - it makes editing any file very very easyAgain to answer Cal's Worry - It doesnt do anything more than Notepad does to a file - just makes editing the files and creating files easy
shape file manager does more than thisIt will edit the signal config but not the signal script file - although i wish it did.Jason Webb

MSTS Tree Editor – image 14

A decompiler is a program that reverse engineers an object file such as a MSTS shape file and produces a source file that can be edited with TSM, GMAX or similar program. There are many who have asked for such programs but probably a hundred times as many the don't want such a program produced and distributed. The fear is loss of control of proprietary work and ease of piracy. I am reasonably certain that one or more decompilers have been written for MSTS but the authors are keeping quiet about it.Cal Rasmussen

MSTS Tree Editor – image 17

Cal,Thanks for that. Personally, I can't see why anyone would want to hack into the .s file and modify it. But I can understand why the creator of the object would be very much upset if his/her work was changed by someone and then they claimed it was their's. I would be p****d off if someone took an image from my website, removed my name and claimed it was their work!Cheers,
David.

RE: MSTS Tree Editor

In my opinion, hacking the .S file or using a decompiler on it are really no different to using TGATool2 to hack into an .ace file and repaint a loco. The differences between re-shaping a model and editing its texture files seem negligible.

RE: MSTS Tree Editor

Bang on!An no one should be afraid to to do all of that, providing credit is given where credit is due.I regularly 'hack' .s files, sometimes just to try and understand them a bit more. And the term 'decompliler' is perhaps misleading (semantics I suppose). The term 'translating' seems more appropriate.Martyn T. Griffin

Hi,I see that you get a .s file loaded. I only got a hourglass! After some minutes, I tried to stop the program, but that wasn't easy.
But still my judgement stands, a great program.Dick van den HovenMSTS Tree Editor – image 18

Well, I downloaded and tried it last night and aside from not handling large files, it's great! I loaded the file US2Warehouse4.s to see if I could remove the distance levels and it was a piece of cake. I had previously looked at the file with wordpad and was somewhat overwhelmed by the complexity of the distance levels section. Now if Etienne can change it to handle large files, it would be even better.(edit) I just sent an email to Etienne to make sure he is aware of the large file problem.Cal Rasmussen

What have you got? I could use some large (huge) log piles (200x50 ft), some log rafts (bunch of logs lashed together for river transport), motels (1 and 2 story), a paddlewheel riverboat, windsurfers, kite-surfers, modern cars, modern gas stations, modern fast food restaurants, mobile homes -- various sizes and styles. Anything else you've got, I would be interested. Thanks.Cal Rasmussen

Hi Jason,You reminded me about the SCL line. I seem to remember that the SunTrust bank building in Orlando was popping in and out as you drove by.Don't forget to add the ABC Liquor warehouse in Taft by the S. intermodal crossing. That way, my wife in the minivan on Orange Ave. waiting for the Intermodel to make its way into the yard, can have some refreshments and ease her anger over waiting so long.

Here is a 50's style McDonald's that I did last summer. It's in the library. Are you working on a later one? I would be happy to share the photographs that I used for textures on this one. I would very much like to see your version.MSTS Tree Editor – image 30Cal Rasmussen

RE: MSTS Tree Editor

Cal,Your McDonald's reminds me of the original McDonalds in Orlando on Colonial Dr. across from Executive Airport. I think the building is still at that location with the arches removed, however.

RE: MSTS Tree Editor

I used it for editing consist and activity files. The tree format makes it a little easier than just using Wordpad. I also used it to examine service files to identify which consists were no longer required when I removed a route. Now if you coders are up to it what would be really nice is a utility that reads the services file within a route folder and lists the consist names eliminating the duplicates. Pulling Loose Consists out of activity files would also be nice, especially if you could change the entries and resave the file.

RE: MSTS Tree Editor

Hi Bob,Route-Riter does most of what you are suggesting. It pulls the loose consists out of the Activity files and lists all the entries, also all the consists from the Route etc. It does include all the duplicates, but would not take much work to list with the duplicates removed.New beta version of RR at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~agene/Software/RRit3859.zip will package an activity for you as a .zip file, and provide you with a list of all the rolling-stock used, including loose consists, this list has the duplicates removed and is in alphabetical order.

Hi Mike
Just a couple more things to your program and at that rate it will be the only one needed:7
Just took this occasion to thank you for Routeriter ..it is excellent.
I think you should make a list of what one can do with it...I believe many people still just think of it as a route building tool.
Thanks again.

A Little OT

Mike,While writing the code for RR, have you ever used the PrintForm method for dumping a form to the default printer? I ask because, although it is doing exactly what I want as far as output is concerned, the application won't exit when asked. It can be more than an hour after printing. The windows all go away and the icon goes away in the tray. But task manager still shows it as active, apparently waiting for something.I hate to think I will have to convert to detailed Printer object calls to do this!BTW: It is VB 6 with SP5 (Part of VS6)Martyn T. RE: MSTS Tree Editor

Hi Mike,I have RR3850 which I downloaded last week while at a client's office with a T1 connection. Where I live I have the "wet string" telephone network so I'm reluctant to download a 5M file at home.I didn't install it because I read some concerns about it on the UKTRAINSIM site so I was waiting for an upgrade. Will give it a go.Thanks
