Columbia Gorge – More Screenshots – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Apr-13-03 AT 03:46 PM (EDT)

Here are some shots of the Kerr-McGee Tie Treatment Plant and industrial area in the city of The Dalles, OR. Two of the shots show what I have been doing with forest regions. The density is correct for this area but will need to be much more dense to the west of this area. Some of the shots show Ron Picardi's new chain link fencing. It's great, Ron. Thanks.(edit) Ok...I was asleep and forgot to upload the pix!Columbia Gorge – More Screenshots – image 2

Now THAT'S a tie plant!Makes the little piddly tie mill's around these parts look mighty dinky.Of course, you're modeling a treatment plant... ours are cutting mills.Curious: What kind of impact does the chain link and all those tie stacks have on the FPS?Andre Ming

The tie stacks are only 12 polys each. They are simple boxes with tiled textures. The fence, however, seems to be having a significant impact. That plant is almost a mile long and about a 1/4 mile wide. There is currently fence all the way around it. I may eliminate the fence on the north side since it can't be seen.Cal Rasmussen

Cal,
Your time and attention to detail will pay off methinks. Your route will rank right up there with "must have and impressive". Sometimes the little things within a route brings out the route better...in my opinion. Good job!KipColumbia Gorge – More Screenshots – image 10

I was expecting to see a textile mill of sorts and lots of patches of material hanging out to dry. Isn't that part of the process of making ties?? Are you happy with Ron's fences, and are they setup to 'snap' in place?Martyn T. Griffin

Martyn, I think the fences look extremely good. They don't snap together like track and roads. What I did was use the placement grid to place the first few sections. A 100 ft section is 30.48 meters. I set the grid spacing to 30.48 and placed a few sections perfectly aligned with each other. I then turned the grid off, selected all the sections just placed and moved the group into the final position. While the group was still selected, I did a copy (ctrl-c). I could then replicate the group as much as I wanted. The angle is preserved in the copy and you only have to worry about the n/s, e/w position of the group.Cal Rasmussen

Cal, since you said what you did about not snapping together like track and roads, did you try using the 'X' key and see if they would come together. Just checking since it sure makes it easier.

It's BIG!! 882 mb. However, there's a lot of stuff in the shapes and texture folders that will be stripped out at Route-Riter time. I have a ton of scenery objects loaded and continue to add more every day. Obviously, not all will be used!Robert, I didn't try "X" since Ron indicated he had not incorporated the snap-together feature at this time.Cal Rasmussen

Unfortunately, I have not been into this plant. I have driven all around the perimeter fence several times and have taken a lot of photos. I also obtained some excellent aerial or satellite photos from Terraserve.com. It appears that currently centerbeam lumber cars are used. I am not sure to what extent this plant is still in production. It is listed as a superfund site for ground and water contamination. It was originally owned and operated by Union Pacific RR.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Columbia Gorge -- More Screenshots

I believe that Seattle to Tacoma (southward) is in progress, as is Stampede Pass, Auburn to Easton....(I'll be corrected if I am wrong)And I'm slowly working on the west side of the sound, Shelton area currently, but will span north up the Kitsap peninsula, west to Aberdeen and south from Elma to Centralia/Chehelis. That is the long term plans, short term in Shelton bounded by Hwy 101 to the south and west and John's Prairie to the north. First route and its taking time.Bill
