Aug-03-01, 00:50 AM (EST) "If you think Train Sim's Editors are complex... (JPG Image)" Look at the "Epic Games" game "Unreal" editor.
I couldn't get all windows on screen to show how complex it is.The game image I show is the TUTORIAL. The editor scripting language is close to C++ and games must be compiled. The editor requires 448 MBytes RAM or it won't load. This is release 2.0 and there still is NO documentation and we still have NO help file.Message Areas - "If you think Train Sim's Editors are complex… (JPG Image)" – image 1 Jim Steven, MCSE

(JPG Image)" We play Unreal on Friday afternoons using a dedicated server on a subnet. There are 15 to 20 people online when we start the game and since I'm not as fast as my twenty and thirty-something co-workers, we play a "Capture the Flag" scenario.I learned their editor when someone suggested we landscape a scenario using the AutoCAD maps of the building floors.Jim Steven, MCSE

(JPG Image)" Your point about 'unsupported' software is well taken But hey, this is 2001, and MS...we could expect better!I remember when unreal came out there was a 2 mb patch out every two weeks..... and we thought THAT was pathetic. Look at MS, still no word on anything except another absurd, useless and self-gratifying 'faq' and those insufferable 'guides to the routes' - what the hell are those, travel brochures? And I've written better Help files for developer tools I give away (like a Windows Media Player script writer).I don't even remember where I learned that "V" cuts holes in terrain and "D" copies the current Embankment/Cut/Width so you can repeatedly stamp a terrain into shape. I know it wasn't in any documentation.I've heard though that the message board posts and Tech Support e-mails are starting to have an impact.Jim Steven, MCSE

Aug-03-01, 07:36 PM (EST) 6. "RE: "D"!?!?!??!" There's also "R", "O", "PAGE UP" and "PAGE DOWN". Take a look at "editor.txt" in the Global folder. There's some other stuff there too.Stew Clark Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

It allows ANYTHING to be created (as long as the graphics card holds out in the game). It can import .3DS files directly as brushes. Imagine how much more powerful MSTS would be with that kind of ability. Add to that the fact that Unreal's textures start life as .BMP files. They are NOT converted for the program, just packaged into texture pack .UTX files. (Sorry, Epic fan) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

If it comes from a corporate design, we may end up facing talking paper clips for help.

Microsoft Help files are much like a Siamese cat--they only like their owner and they only oblige to make you feel better when they feel like it.Hasn't anyone come up with a hack for Clippy that allows you to do unspeakable things to that nuisance?
