On some routes I have installed most categories of objects such as buildings and RR stations do not appear in the RE placement window. The objects themselves are visible in RE and MSTS. These routes include PO&N6, SeaView2, GeorgetownLoop and Savoie06.

RE: Objects in RE Placement Window not listed

Did you update your routes REF file? Each object needs to be entered.
If you did do that and they don't show up there may be an error in your REF file. Usually an extra ")".

Beluga:If you're trying to view the items using the "Thumbnails" option, deselect that option and see if your complete list will appear that way.Sometimes RE bogs on a category with lots of Thumbnails.Andre Ming

In preparation for distribution of the route, all unnecessary scenery objects are removed to save space in the install file and in the final installation. Only those objects actually used in the route are included.Cal Rasmussen

I guess I am missing something here. As distributed, the .ref file should contain entries for all objects actually used in the route but no others. Are you saying you cannot see those?I have SV2 and PO&N6 and should receive SV3 beta today. I will check the .ref files when I get home and also go into RE and see what's there.Cal Rasmussen

I will look at what I have when I get home and report back to you. In the meantime, if you edited the .ref file with an editor that is not Unicode capable, the file was saved as a straight text file which RE cannot use. The easy fix for that is to load the file into Wordpad and resave it in Unicode format. If you have WinXP or Win2K, Notepad can edit Unicode files. You just need to be sure the file is saved as Unicode.Cal Rasmussen

I just checked SV2 and PO&N6 on my system and observed the same behavior. I took a good look at the .ref and I see some "SKIP" statements there. Apparently these block the display of items that follow. The only items showing in the object select window are about the first six or seven items in the file.I am one of the beta testers for Sea View 3 so I will be in touch with Bill Burnett (Tree Frog) quite a bit. I'll ask him about it.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Objects in RE Placement Window not listed

Hi Cal,The SKIP statements are just 'Remark' lines and the skip only applies to the one line, Jim uses these to group similar shapes together in the file.I have checked PO&N and Seaview 2 in my RE, and all the items included are there and available to use.

Then we have a strange anomaly, indeed. I will be checking with Bill and maybe do some experimenting, myself.Cal Rasmussen

Alan,
I have found the problem with both SV2 and PO&N6. As delivered, the .ref files are in Windows text format not Unicode. To use them, you need to load them into Wordpad and then click file-->save as and choose Unicode text as the file type. Click OK to overwrite the existing file. In the case of SV2, you may get a half dozen "shape file missing" errors when RE starts up. Just click OK and continue. The standard caviat applies here: BACKUP the .ref files BEFORE doing anything to them.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Objects in RE Placement Window not listed

Thanks Cal - changing the REF file to Unicode fixed all routes.
