I almost became obsessed with this scene but I really like the way it turned out. Time to move on ... next stop, Latty.

RE: County Farm .. a last look

"I almost became obsessed with this scene"...I KNOW the feeling, my route building friend, I know the feeling. "...but I really like the way it turned out."Definitely has the "sanitorium" feel. Good job."Time to move on ... next stop, Latty."Wish I could say that... I'm "stuck" in the Russellville/Dardanelle town areas. I just can't get the "look" I'm after. Ever been there?Wife and I are kind of thinking about a field trip to the area this Saturday... but we'll have to wait and see.Really, my dilema is Rich Garber's fault. You see, I was trying to be satisfied with my approach to building a largeish town (i.e. try to build only what is viewed from the train)... then I saw some screens from his route. (I assume pics from his in-process Build 11.) There was such "depth" to the scene. I see this "depth" in many prototype routes guys are building (like Larry's FS Sub, Paul's GM&O, Vince's NEC, etc), but with a freelanced route it's sometimes harder to capture such a convincing "look". Well, after seeing that screen of Rich's freelanced work depicting a larger type town... now I look at mine through different eyes.I'll get it sorted.Maybe its time to take a break and begin to learn Gmax? (Said statement followed by a gasp in fear.)Nah. Not yet.Andre

I've never visited the areas I'm attempting to model and even though it's freelanced I'd like it to be believable. To that end I use several resources. Good ole Terraserver, Topozone and my secret weapon; the Ohio Rail Commission's Crossing Inventory website. What is it? A photographic inventory of EVERY public at grade railroad crossing in the state of Ohio. What good is it? It gives me a general idea of what the area around the tracks looks like as well as scenery in the surrounding area as they take photos of both the ROW and street, in both directions. AND they link the area you're looking at to a map at topozone so that you can see a layout of the town as well as it's long. and lat. coords. Too cool (and quite frankly, after 9/11 I'm surprised it's still online). If you want to take a look at the site email me and I'll send you the link.Touching on the "depth" issue I'll be watching your progress carefully as I've got a fairly large town in my future called Napoleon, Ohio. Home to a very large Campbell's Soup plant (and a roundhouse, and a drive-in theatre and ...) all on the former DT&I. It's the one area that I plan on modeling as close to the prototype as my abilities will allow. That's why I started the route on the rural end; I've got 50 some odd miles left to use as a "test bed".

Dave, don't take this as criticism since it is beautiful .. I'm just trying to save you some tear out and redo work in the future. If you leave the platform siding that small, it will give you and the activity makers a hard time as far as waiting times when you start doing activities for it. It might work correctly, but often times it's very hard to stop in the correct place with ones that size without incurring a very long loading time that was not accounted for. Just a thought since I learned the hard way as usual

"If you leave the platform siding that small, it will give you and the activity makers a hard time as far as waiting times when you start doing activities for it"That's a good point and one that I've wanted to ask about. In the case of the County Farm area, I've used the platform marker simply as an informational tool to identify a unique area. This particular marker reads "Old COUNTY FARM Road". I've used them in several places the same way, to identify county and state road crossings, etc. My question would be ... is this a safe practice or am I setting myself up for a RE meltdown from platform marker mis-use? I chose the platform markers because I didn't foresee anyone creating any passenger activities on a stub ended branch-line .. shortsightedness on my part maybe. Thanks for the heads up Robert. Any way, you've got a beautiful route going

"and Yeah..I understand. I go throught that every time I hit a gravel road crossing, or a cool looking horizon shot"I'm surprised I make any progress at all. Working on the route mainly on weekends it usually takes 3-4 days working a couple hours at a time, to get an area to the point that I'm satisfied with it enough to move on. And then, while I'm 5 miles away in the next town I think of something that I REALLY want to add at that last location, so it's off I go ... making a reverse movement.

If anyone does the Tuscola Saginaw Bay route, they will need this as that route goes by a former state mental hospital Southwest of Caro.SRV Ron

Ron,The County Farm complex was constructed from three MSTS objects, two of your barns (thanks, they're great), a sugar mill from the download library that I relettered and the PARKSTRAAT building (x3)also from the file library. I wanted to see how close I could get to that "look" with what was available.Oh, Ron ...Could I ask you a small favor as our resident "iron worker"?Do you think you could construct a simple arched "wrought iron" type of entrance ornamental fixture to go over the County Farm's road entrance? Just something simple to give it an official institutional look?Dave Mikulec (dmikulec@bellsouth.net)

Would need a gate and iron fence too. This might be better done as a photo of one in which the alpha texture is cut out as the object itself need not have much details.SRV Ron

Here's a shot of the entrance itself, showing the old guard house and fence. Visitors would have had to stop here and sign in before they could proceed to the main facility. This is the portion of the old road that is open to the main state road, behind the camera.Dave Mikulec (dmikulec@bellsouth.net)
