I can't believe it!I just got back from a hospital trip to Ft. Smith. Once finished, I "happened" by the Ft. Smith Trolley Museum where some pieces of railroad history are stored. As I was standing next to the nicely preserved Frisco 2-8-2 Mikado #4003... my mind begin to "dream".What with the nice "bread and butter" steamers that have hit the library (standard gauge USRA-type 2-8-0's, 2-6-2's, etc)... the thought drifted through my mind that the Missouri & Arkansas was "do-able" via MSTS. Ooo! Cool! It could be modeled during it's "Last Gasp" WW2 years, so traffic would abound! It would be set in the mid-40's, and all the vehicles, structures, etc would reflect the era! I could model the portion to...STOP!! Get a GRIP, man, get a GRIP.I've GOT to get a handle on this... NO WAY I can start another route. I mean, look at the situation as of now:In process: * The 1880's Colorado narrow gauge SC&N
* The 1969 era KC&G Ozark SubQue'd and waiting:* The Colorado Central from Golden, Co. to points west.
* The DSP&P from St. Elmo to Gunnison. And now I'm wanting to add the M&A???? No way. NO WAY.This is ridiculous.There. Sanity is returning. Whew. Near miss. Just about was off on a tangent. Much better now.Hm.Guess it wouldn't hurt to look at the DEM's, would it? Andre (Only Kidding... for now) Ming

Andre, I still remember the day you showed up writing about the great new game you got, MSTS, and how excited you were about the whole thing.
You are too cool, dude. Don't slow down Mark

RE: ARGHHH!!!

Hi Mark! Thanks for the kind words. Note on your membership stamp that we're old veterans of this board now, eh?Yup, I'd like to do the M&A... but I'll kick the idea around a while.I can "convince" myself that I "need" to do the M&A easily, after all, my Colorado Central route idea has run into DEM problems that won't go away.... and the DSP&P route is already being done. No need to duplicate... plus, my SC&N caters to my narrow gauge affliction quite nicely.Hmmm... time for more thought.Guess it wouldn't hurt to download a nice looking USRA Consolidated just for a test drive, you think? "Yup, I'd like to do the M&A... but I'll kick the idea around a while."You know what they say: If it feels good, do it.And in this case, who's gonna get hurt. And if that didn't make any sense, remember that it's 7:20AM and I've only had one cup of coffee. Gotta go out and feed the horses ...Dave Mikulec (dmikulec@bellsouth.net)

RE: ARGHHH!!!

Andre - I guess misery just loves company!I am experiencing the same thing - so many routes, so little time. I'm hard on the 2nd version of the Cumbres Pass line (I hesitate to call it CTSRR since it's really supposed to be the D&RGW during the 40s-60s). The first version was built as a training "exercise," and I didn't expect to be working on the same route a year later. In the queue:Alamosa - Santa Fe (D&RGW): DEMs downloaded, terrain built, a bit of track in place, but on hold until we're into Chama.
Chama - Durango: DEMs identified, and maps glanced at. This one may get as far as Farmington, but won't head toward Silverton.
Raleigh - Union Station, DC: I've ridden the train on this route several times, but that's as much planning as I've done.I'd also like to see the route(s) between DC and Pittsburgh built. I'm surprised I haven't seen it discussed more often, given the history of that line (or those lines I should say). For now, though, I'm at a standstill with a dead power supply. Hope (NEED) to get that fixed in the next day or two.Andy

RE: ARGHHH!!!

Well, sanity may prevail after all.The M&A's first district was about 129 miles long. That's a lot of route, even if it is through the sparsely populated Ozark hills. The route would cross the same north/south lat/long parallel that causes a white void on the FS Sub route. So that's a possiblility for a minor disappointment. There's only been one book ever published concerning the line. It has good corporate history, some appetizer pictures, some roster info and even a profile... but no trackage diagrams or charts. Seeing as the line's not well documented and is rather obscure, it would very difficult to come up with some idea of the trackage arrangements for the various towns along the way.For "giggles" last night, I took the empty Clear Creek route with what working DEM's I have for it... and plopped down a couple or so miles of hastily laid track through one of the more spectacular areas and ran a train through there. In a word: Fabulous. Very different "feel" and "look" than my SC&N narrow gauge. So, the M&A MAY be "someday"... but who knows?Andre "The Shiftless Route Builder" Ming

RE: ARGHHH!!!

Andre,
Weekend before last the wife and I drove down 259 to Broken Bow across the Winding Stair Mountains. I had to make a "pit" stop and pulled over at that little Forest Service rest stop just past Talihina drive called "Pipe Spring". I'm sure you know where I'm talking about. I was reading all the Forest Service signs there about how it was made to service the lumber spur that cut through the mountains there for the lumber mills in the 1920's. Man was that beautiful! And I was thinking out loud about how great that would look in MSTS....
Then my wife said something about divorce or murder, and we drove on.
It would still be beautiful to do though!
Larry

RE: ARGHHH!!!

Larry:I understand completely. My solution is to take two bum 'puters and botch together one functioning one... put it in here in my computer/hobby room... and now my wife sits over on "her" computer and plays games while I build routes! Thus we talk, converse, i.e. "be together". Works for us.Jonathan:I had intended to model the narrow gauge portion of the CC in its entirety, that is, from Golden to the end of the line, including the Black Hawk Branch.Be reminded, there are no "dibby's" on this stuff. Have at it.It will be a loooooooooong time before serious work can begin on my version of the CC.Andre
