LAST EDITED ON Feb-10-03 AT 07:17 PM (EDT)

Been "creating" a couple industries. In these two cases, I felt I wanted larger industries that had a more "recent" look to them. (After all, this area that the KC&G passes through was beginning to develope in the 60's.) So, staying with default stuff, I stacked and placed and mixed and matched to produce these two larger industries.Beibler Lumber Company is "sort of" based on a prototype Beibler Lumber Company that is in the Russellville/Dardanelle area.Receives by rail: Raw pine logs, Signode banding, various supplies, empty bulkheads, boxcars, and chip cars for loading.Ships: Lumber products.Arkansas Container is another of my creations, but is based on the general "feel" of an industry in at nearly the same location. Again, mixed/mingled default stuff. For this one, I wanted an interior delivery track.Receives by rail: Boxcars of Corrugated carboard rolls, maufacturing supplies, etc. Tank cars of parafin wax. Empties out.Thought they were done. But have decided they look a bit "sterile"... so will be going back in and finding some "stuff" to place.Having fun!Andre Ming

Wow, the DEM's did a good job on Mt Nebo. The industrys are looking good and not too sterile. Just wait until that's the 200th industry you've put down. Let's see, maype I can stand the lumber on it's edge this time!

Larry said:> Wow, the DEM's did a good job on Mt Nebo. Don't forget my superb skills at extracting DEM's. (Like it's real hard, huh?) BTW, the beginnings of the branch to Ft. Smith pass on the south side of Mt. Nebo. For one brief moment... I was tempted to go ahead and shoot for Ft. Smith. Figured I'd terminate at the South Ft. Smith area that the Ft. Smith RR now owns. The now-defunct Arkansas Casket would then be alive and well and on the KC&G! So I got out my Arkansas topo map atlas to check the miles... eegad! I would double the route miles! SOOOO.... I'm back to my original idea of just modeling a very small portion of the Ft. Smith branch to some coal mines.> The industrys are looking good and not too sterile.

I think it's amazing that you're getting that look using only the default stuff. It's going to make me take another look at how I'm doing things.I also like the "play-by-play" updates that you've been posting on your two routes. I know I've learned quite a bit from them. Keep up the good work!Henry

Hainree said:"I think it's amazing that you're getting that look using only the default stuff. It's going to make me take another look at how I'm doing things." Well, I'm not sticking with ONLY default... but I am using as much of it as I possibly can. I looked at those scenes again, and in the lumber mill scene, I see three confirmed non-default items:cp_sawhopper (used once)
nrcoalchute (used once)
7chevy (used a couple times?)In the container plant, I see two:nrcoalchute (once)
7chevy (couple times?)However, I know that 95%-99% of the basic structures are default. I've discovered that apparently default stuff uses less CPU resource than just about any structures I've found to date. There are locations that I use 3rd party structures, but I try to do so sparingly. There is definitely a challenge is reusing the same structures (default in this discussion, but any structure in general) and trying to find ways to mute the ruse as best I can. But, it's a trade off I'm willing to make. I am learning that it's the TRAINS that take the most CPU resource. When it comes to the trains, on account of my 1969 era, I find that I use 99%-100% NON default. I take a tremendous CPU hit running the non-default trains. Case in point: I was heartsick when I started a train sitting at my latest example of Dardanelle Yard (new track and lots of structures) to see the FPS beginning to waver between 19-20 FPS in eyes forward cab and headout views. I cut the engines off, and then went to check out the newly placed siding tracks and structures. Any time I looked back toward the train, the FPS would plummet to 10 or 11, at one time as low as 9. I was disheartened thinking I had created for myself a CPU gobler right here in the wide open Arkansas river bottoms. Then it dawned on me: Wait a minute, I'm essentially looking at two extra engines and a yard full of "eye candy" cars of the non-used train consisting of nearly 50 non-default, high poly/fat textured rolling stock! I'll be operating in this area with a switch engine and minimal cuts of cars. So, on a whim, I backed out of the sim, created a consist of one road switcher and a dozen or so cars and jumped back into the same scene. Presto: FPS in the 20's or greater regardless of where the train was, or the camera angle. Lesson: Later I will use ONLY the rollings stock that is necessary to accomplish the operation at hand, with minimal consist placing for "eye candy" effect. I guess I have a hang-up, but I really enjoy sticking my head out the cab window and watching the cut of cars I'm shoving move fluidly along the rails. I can't get that with 50 or so non-default rolling stock cars in the background."I also like the "play-by-play" updates that you've been posting on your two routes. I know I've learned quite a bit from them. Keep up the good work!"Well thanks a bunch for saying so. Seems like most of my update posts sink like a rock, so I was sort of getting the idea that (except for a couple/three others) most of my stuff wasn't too interesting to the troops. I accepted that, placed the conclusion under the "Oh Well" column, and continued posting for personal enjoyment. So, it's fun when you find out someone else has enjoyed my drivel and steps in every now and then to cheer me onward. To wit: THIS drivel!!Talk to you later!Andre Ming

Yup, I knowed that. However, like you pointed out, once you place a cut of static cars... they're there forever in the sim and can't be moved. However, you can't get too carried away with this. Case in point: I have in my arsenal a static KC&G RS11 (There will be more static engines for scenic placement as they're painted.)... but even the static sucker costs me 4-5 FPS in RE. I've used it at one scene with low object placement figures... but scuttled the idea of using it at the ever-growing-fatter Dardanelle/Dardanelle Yard area. Me thinks this area will be my biggest/fattest/greatest challenge to maintain what I want.I'll ponder it a bit.Andre

RE: ...Something borrowed, something blue... (3 sm Pics

Hi Larry:JP1carpark1I went into RE and went through each default route's "Object" window. Anything that looked interesting, I plopped into the scene to look at. Upon seeing this, I figured I could use this parking lot over and over again. Also did this with the few add-on routes I have... so some stuff was added without me knowing whether it is default or not. I don't think the lumber stacks I got off your FS Sub are default? (I don't remember seeing them in the default routes?)Andre

Lumber stacks and pallets are in the download section. YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE A PALLET MILL!!!!!
I've been thinking about trying my hand at building a stack of bricks for the ACME brick plant.
I use alot of JP objects. Guess I just overlooked that one, and I've been looking all over for a good parking lot!

Ol' Larry the Diddler said:"Lumber stacks and pallets are in the download section."Thought they weren't default... they look really good! Plus, how do you make a 8 poly object overly consume CPU resource? "YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE A PALLET MILL!!!!!"Observant you are, Mr. Friddle. Indeed pallet plants seem quite prevelant in the Ozark sticks. Fear not, Dardanelle Pallet Co. is already in place. Still to come will be Ozark Pallet as well as a few other surprises."I've been thinking about trying my hand at building a stack of bricks for the ACME brick plant."There is hope, oh Great One. See the note above about said 8 poly object. "I use alot of JP objects. Guess I just overlooked that one, and I've been looking all over for a good parking lot!"Well I'm glad to be of help to you, my friend. I know I've scoured and harvested object after object that you've packed into the mega-ref file of the FS Sub. Lands there's a ton of stuff in that last beta. Can't wait to get the next beta... it'll gimme' more goodies to cabbage onto! BWHhahahahahahahahah!! (Mad scientist laughter.)Andre

If your are going to be a serious route builder you will have to copy all default route shapes and textures into your route, and merge all the ref files into one. And that's just for starters! If you end up not using something, it'll come out when you finish and pack it all down. Also don't be afraid to rename. In your ref file rename classes so that now you have sections for Industry, Farm Stuff, Small Town, Urban, and so on. Much quicker to find something that way.
It's off to route building I go.
Talk with ya later.

The Big Guy said..."If your are going to be a serious route builder you will have to..."Me a "serious route builder"? Surely you jest. However, I do take my role of being the Village Idiot of the Route Builder's Guild very seriously. Besides, as long as you'll stuff your FS Sub beta's for me, I'll simply stroll through and pick and choose. "Also don't be afraid to rename."Way ahead of you. Done doing it. Even learned to decomissioned some "Track Objects" so I can use them in non-.tdb threatening situations early on.OH, btw, I found a default shape that I can use for a peckerwood sawmill! How cool. I hope to reskin some default "freight" shapes to look similiar to tie stacks.Another btw: I've been checking FPS hits on various structures/items. The Kuju clowns aren't quite as dumb as we think! Almost any default item, regardless how big or "complex"... has almost negligible impact on FPS!! I was able to place multiples and multiples without a single frame hit, or at the most 1 FPS! Go find that parking lot! Andre

RE: ...Something borrowed, something blue... (3 sm Pics

I found it. I ran an early version of refclean (about v1.1 I think) and I noticed that I lost a lot of objects after that. I didn't notice it right away but I just discover sometimes that various objects that I have used in the past are no longer in my reference file. The newest version seems AOK after the siding problem was fixed. Anyway, discovering that I had lost the parking lot made me re merge my reference files and now I am sure I have everything back again.
I think one of the things with the Kuju objects is that the s files are compressed. I think that the compression is not only compression but pre rendering. That makes the files not only smaller but cuts down on the amount of work the graphics card has to do to display the object.
