Q: What is this?Amazing dynamic track, and its use in rollercoasters – image 1A: The white V marks a badly twisted piece of dynamic track that plunges down a deep ravine. This happened as I was fooling around with MSTS dynamic track. This dynamic track piece includes two 90 degree curves, so it turns through 180 degrees. But I also made it "bank" (tilt sideways) by 60 degrees: as a result its middle part slopes down by 60 degrees! The most surprising thing is that the crossties (sleepers) stay horizontal everywhere, and the two rails match those horizontal crossties everywhere. In other words, the visible track is not banked anywhere; it is only sloped. And a train riding on this track will always stay upright (not banked sideways), matching those rails. So there is no superelevation. (Another oddity: the steeper the track, the narrower the gauge. Indeed, MSTS draws the rails closer together and shortens the crossties!)Q: How steep can this "bank" or slope become?
A: As steep as you want!Q: How do you twist a dynamic track this way?
A: You need the Object Rotator (part of my Route Building Guide) to give it the needed "bank" (sideways tilt) by changing its QDirection values in the World files.Q: Can this weird shape help in building a rollercoaster?
A: Yes! See here:Amazing dynamic track, and its use in rollercoasters – image 2This entire spaghetti bowl of tracks is composed of only 15 dynamic track pieces, suitably twisted by "banking". This does not count the straight tracks at top, which serve as "entrance" to the rollercoaster, and a switch in the bottom, which allows the driver to choose two different "outcomes" (a vertical jump, or climbing up toward the camera's position).Q: Can an MSTS train survive this spaghetti?
A: Yes! See next:Amazing dynamic track, and its use in rollercoasters – image 3Actually, not all trains resist this highly twisting treatment: some couplers may break, while some trains (especially passenger trains) are too stiff to squeeze through the narrow bends. So you can try it out, I will upload this "route", called Arollercoaster (together with instructions how to make one yourself). Warning: it is bare-bones (for high frame rates…), and dangerous for your heart!

RE: Amazing dynamic track, and its use in rollercoaster

That´s great, Michael! Now we can do a tivoli. Hope someone do a roller coaster car or train!? Why not put all of this on flat ground and put out some ferriswheels, fences and more stuff?

Amazing, Michael. You've really got too much time on your hands. Have you tried taking the jet train on this track? with derailments turned off?Cal Rasmussen

What happens if you use the SuperCharged Dash 9 going down the hill? Does it achieve 8000mph? I think in Marias Pass, it acieved a maximum of only 4000mph...

RE: Amazing dynamic track, and its use in rollercoaster

I haven't tried! Keep in mind that at 3600 mph you cover a mile in one second. So you would cover the length of this rollercoaster in about one second: I think you won't have enough time to appreciate the experience!BTW: I have just uploaded the route to the file library, as file Arollerc.zip (88 kB).

RE: Amazing dynamic track, and its use in rollercoaster

You could try turning up the gravity in the route properties files(.trk) to something like 100.0 and see what happens. Look for a line that says GravityScale ( 1 ) and change it as high as you like. You might be able to reach a few thousand mph on that loop.

I don't understand how this can work. I thought that MSTS didn't like loops Martyn T. Griffin

Actually, you don't need a lot of power. In fact I would recommend going in at about half throttle or less. Momentum and gravity will take over. Be ready on the brakes. Even with derailments turned off, you can still derail or lose part of your train. Look at my "Abandon Hope..." pictures in the screenshot forum.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Amazing dynamic track, and its use in rollercoaster

Congratulations: that certainly looks much more prototypical than mine!I have been secretly hoping that someone will build the necessary support structures for a roller coaster in MSTS (not necessarily in wood), while also wondering how much the frame rate would be affected.

RE: Amazing dynamic track, and its use in rollercoaster

Thanks Mike,The way it is done in T****Z is that it is a trestle bridge section that behaves like a piece of dynamic track (or spline as it is called on the dark side), thus making the rollercoaster very easy to make, I just layed the basic floor plan of the coaster and raised and lowered the spline points to produce the dips and bumps. I get about 80 FPS and the view out of the cab is nauseous the speed is about 180 MPH flat out.Terry
