It took me about 3 months to build my first route and as it was finished, as a precaution, I zipped it up and saved the zip to a CD for backup.
Fate !!! then intervened. My OS is on C drive and MSTS amongst other things is on D drive.
My OS crashed ( for the benefit of some who think it’s infallible, my OS is WIN XP Pro).
After recovering almost everything from my backups I found the route in question would not load. Usual message, “Failed to load track data base”. Rebuild did nothing, tried the few things I know, to cut a long story short, it appears the problem is that the quad tree for the route has simply disappeared.
Is there any hope, or must I accept the route is lost? If so, what precautions should I take in future to prevent a recurrence?Any suggestions, advice etc., will be gratefully accepted.Cheers,Ken

If you remember exactly which tiles you selected in RGE when you first started the route, you could redo that process like you were creating a new route. Use the same name. Then try to restore the route from backup. I won't guarantee that this will work but give it a try. Hopefully the restored files will overlay the "new" route and everything will be ok.How are you backing up the route and what folders are you backing up? You need to backup all files in your route folder and all subfolders.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Loss of Quad tree

Cal,
Thank for your interest.Remembering detail is'nt an option for me asI'm well in my 70's but I did try recreating the quad file as I knew approx. where it should be. However, once I had reached selection of the rectangle, right click should have allowed "Add All Selection Tiles" but everyting in the box was greyed out except for zoom window out.As for back ups, I zipped the whole route (all 520 MB) and saved the zip to a CDRW. So far as I can be sure, everything is there.Ken

If you think your zip file on the CD is ok, try deleting everything associated with your route and then unzip the CD again. I don't recall...did you reinstall MSTS?(edit) This damn keyboard doesn't spell any better than I do!Cal Rasmussen

Don't give up yet, Ken. Give it a few hours for some of the other gurus to pop in here with suggestions. Compare the folder names on your CD with other installed routes and make sure everything is there on the CD. I have this sneaky fealing that your CD is ok and the problem lies somewhere else.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Loss of Quad tree

Sure, you are right Cal. In the meantime think I'll try messing with
the world files as suggested in a similar thread earlier. After all, I can't break anything, still got my CD which I feel fairly confident about. Thanks again,Ken

RE: Loss of Quad tree

I'm not sure if this might make a difference, but when you save to a CD, everything contained therein becomes a "read-only" file. You might try loading the route into RouteRiter, and use the "Make Read/Write" option to see if that helps.

Yea, Dave! Good call. Now, I am curious. I am aware of the read-only characteristic of CD's. However, I have had to restore my route from backup CD's on several occasions and didn't have a problem.(Edit) I just figured out what's different. I Winzip my entire route folder and then copy the zip file to CD. When restoring, the zip file never gets modified so it doesn't matter that it is read-only.Cal Rasmussen

yep , when files are just copied to a CD , they become read only and that characteristic stays with it when restored to the hard drive.using winzip does take care of the problem.hmmmm , guess I should look up what redundant means , huh? lol
edit:must have the same model of keyboard as cal , since it can't spill good either

It is not a case of redundancy. It's a case of my route is too big to fit on one CD uncompressed!Cal Rasmussen

RE: Loss of Quad tree

I am a little puzzled re remarks about Winzip.Izipped up my route with Winzip and then burned the zip file to the CD.When unzipped to my MSTS route folder it would not work until I applied the advice from Dave.Ken
