Something I've been pondering for quite a while, is ice hanging from water tanks. I made a new ace and alpha to fit one of the shrub s files, and made them translucent. The sun shines through them at the right angle. I did them with all seasons, 252, and used all black alphas for the non cold season textures, so they are invisible out of season.A bit of SVRy 3' gauge progress – image 2Kind of a side track, but before I lay more track, I wanted to tie up loose ends, like things with no snow textures.

Superb."Someday" will you be elaborating on the technique and making the .ace files available for those of us that also model cold winter climates?Andre

One more thing... what rail texture are you using? Did you find a replacement for the ng/default "shimmering" ballast also?Andre

RE: A bit of SVRy 3' gauge progress

How did you do the track texture? Is it possible to extend the length of the ties? It would be neat if I could figure out a way to simulate the hand-hewn ties that the early Colorado narrow gauge lines used.Andre Ming

RE: A bit of SVRy 3' gauge progress

It's a custom ballast and ties ace I made, with untreated ties and typical ballast of the SVRy. The ballast shimmers in the distance, oh well! The rail is from a photo of a polished rail on the UP main, 1000 feet from my house.

It's called NCleantrack1.ace, repaint just the same as any other ace. The ballast mapping is screwy, so don't change the tie placement and, if you keep tie plates, make sure they stay in the same place! The ties could be made longer, and ends could look hand hewn without too much trouble. The rail will go over the point where the tie plates are, no matter where the ties are located.A bit of SVRy 3' gauge progress – image 5here's what the alpha channel looks like. Don't make the edge more wavy than this, as it repeats often. This is enough to get rid of the straight line look along the edge. A bit of SVRy 3' gauge progress – image 6

Steve, that's beautiful! Your snow texture on the tank is much better than I would have done. Great work there!Tim

The engine is #50 of the Sumpter Valley Railway, done by Jon Davis, but not released yet. You are looking SE, towards where they had their engine terminal in So. Baker. Yes, I'm working on the route, about 10 miles in place, I might have a 1st release by sometime in early March. I only get bits and pieces of time to work on it.
