Finding a Diagram – image 2

I have been searching the web, to no avail; I am looking for a detailed schematic of the San Luis Obispo CA track arrangment from South of Laurel Lane up to and including the Marsh Street crossing. Despite living in the area for 40+ years, I never really memorized the layout of the "yard" there. If anyone has such a map scanned, or can steer me to a web site, I would be forever grateful. This is a big hangup in the marker placement of my coast route. Thanks in advance,
Mark MyersFinding a Diagram – image 3

RE: Finding a Diagram....

Hi Mark,Is the route you're working on the one which Amtrak runs the Coast Starlight? Not that long ago, I took a trip on Amtrak with my parents from LA to Santa Barbara. It's a very scenic line!I do remember coming across a website which had fairly detailed parcel maps in PDF form, which also depicted all trackage in the selected area. Unfortunately, I don't remember the web address. I'll see if I can find it again and get back to you. Good luck on your route!Chris

It is the Coast Starlight Route, I once took the trip from SLO to Santa Barbara, and it was a lovely trip. I am most looking forward to modeling Cuesta Pass, one of the most interesting bits of trackage around. I hope that you are able to find the site, I spent over 5 hours last night searching and all I got was a headache. If you ever get the chance to take the trip again, head north from San Luis Obispo to Morgan Hill. I think that you would find the trip over Cuesta Pass and through the Tembadero Slough to be quite lovely.Take careFinding a Diagram – image 5

RE: Finding a Diagram....

I can drink to that (if I drank). In Jan. 1999, I rode the CS from Seattle to LA, and I looked forward to that ride from PasoRobles to SLO, and I was not disappointed. This is a route that UP would like to quit, I hear, but perhaps the STate can acquire it. I lost track of the tunnels, and I believe one was bypassed some years ago account of a fire in it. The grade is around 2.5%, and I am guessing the curves to have been at least 15 degree curves. We had the usual consist plus a bunch of MHCs on the rear, and I plugged my Camcorder into the power outlet in my space, and thus got an unbroken tape all the way down. About 1/2 mile south (or east by railroad) from the summit tunnel, it was one devil of a long drop, more or less straight down.J. H. Sullivan, P.E. (retired)

That would probably be the trip down into Santa Margarita. Long tunnel under "TV Tower" Mountain, passing right underneath the 101. I have never had the pleasure of taking the trip, I would give my eye teeth to view the tape. Finding a Diagram – image 7

I am a life-long SP fan and have a number of books about SP. At least one of them has a detailed diagram of the San Luis Obispo yards. I will figure out which one, and I can make a xerox copy and mail it to you.John DeLamater

RE: Finding a Diagram....

Mark,I found the diagrams and have made copies of them. One diagram is of the entire yard complex, beginning and ending at the double-track at the north and south ends of the yard. The other is of the central section of the yard, centered on the roundhouse. Each one is 11" x 17", so the detail is good. Send me your snail nail address, and I'll send them Priority Mail. No charge. As a life-long SP fan, I am happy to help your project.John DeLamater

You Sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. Thank you so very much, I will be looking at the mail with baited breath. As soon as I get a fair portion of the track laid, would you like me to mail you a CD with a beta copy of the route on it, and would you mind credit in the readme file for your kind assitance? I just cannot thank you enough for the trouble that you went through to get these diagrams to me. Finding a Diagram – image 13

It will be a while before the route will be ready to send out as a beta, since I am still laying markers, but I have your return address now, and will be sure to send you a CD as soon as I have a good portion of the track laid. I wanted you to know that the diagrams arrrived, they are beautiful, and to be honest, the memories that brought back from my childhood from time spend just hanging around the SLO station literally brought tears to my eyes. Your kindness and those diagrams mean more to me than you may ever know.Thank you for the walk down memory lane. Considering life for me lately, it was a real boost.Finding a Diagram – image 15

RE: Finding a Diagram....

Mark,I am happy to hear that the disagrams arrived and were what you were looking for. I can imagine your reaction; I have revisited some of the rail spots I hung out in as a child and teenager. Every few years I ride what is now a Caltrain "commute" from San Francisco to Palo Alto just for the experience. Let me know if I can help in other ways; I have numerous books about SP published since the 1960s.John
