Jul-26-01, 07:21 AM (EST) "UK DEM Data :-( HELP!!" Well I've spent going on 6 hours looking for UK DEM data and so far all I have come up with is the Ordnance Survey site which does the exact data. Just one problem. The whole UK Set is £150,000 (yes you read that correctly) and even just 10 tiles is £100. How I wish I was modelling a US route with all your free DEM / GIS Data!!If anyone knows of anywhere else that does the data then please let me know. Otherwise its a case of getting out the Ordnance Survey paper maps and constructing the scenery contour my contour then manually texturing everything... Even Terraserver doesnt do UK Data!Dave Etheridge Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-26-01, 08:28 AM (EST) 1. "RE: UK DEM Data :-( HELP!!" I know what you mean regarding UK dem data, I have had the same problem, and although not a Total solution, I have started using Wintopo to scan OS maps, this will then turn it into a vectra graphics file that can the have elevation entered semi automatically. It works pretty well and whats more there is a free version on Wintopos website.
Hope this is of some valuejestyn Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-26-01, 11:56 AM (EST) 3. "RE: UK DEM Data :-( HELP!!" The free version. there are not too many restrictions mainlt centred around colour scans. It takes a bit of getting used to ( not as much as the editors ) but oce mastered it works well. there are others on the market R2V, Trac Trix etc. but Wintopo seems to do a very ifficient conversion. Let me know how you go on at johnj@cwcom.net by the way where are You based , I live in Lancashire, Westhoughton to be precise within easy reach of the S&C jestyn Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-26-01, 05:36 PM (EST) 4. "RE: UK DEM Data :-( HELP!!" A couple of questions about this:1) What format did you export vector data from wintopo inand2) How did you load this into MSTS editors - import vector file into Geometry Extractor? Thanks for your help Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-27-01, 08:21 AM (EST) 5. "RE: UK DEM Data :-( HELP!!" Sorry If I mislead You, I have not actually started on any of the editors yet, just getting to grips with the basics of obtaining elevation data using wintopo jestyn Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-27-01, 05:39 PM (EST) 6. "RE: UK DEM Data :-( HELP!!" Tried the wintopo, but by the time you have cleaned up your scan to leave only contours, (wintopo converts everything) you will probably have lost interest. Is'nt this just a trace programme as in most drawing packages ?.
I think that some sort of manual "by eye" method may be the only practical way without some form of DEM data, possibly using markers. Dont forget, if DEM data is so accurate, then where are the embankments around Horton on the S & C ? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-03-01, 05:41 PM (EST) 7. "RE: UK DEM Data :-( HELP!!" I've tried wintopo (freeware)... firstly you can't vectorise just the contours - it vectorises everything, secondly you can't (I believe)enter height values for contours and thirdly you can't georeference. The first problem you can get round by tracing the map in something like paintshop pro and them loading that image into wintopo, but i fail to see how you can enter the data for items 2 and 3...Any ideas??
