Some of us would like to delete some (or all) of the default routes, to save hard drive space. However, new routes compressed using Route Riter require the six default routes be installed. Which files are absolutely necessary for Route Riter to function properly? For instance, am I safe in deleting the World and Tiles folders?

chuck, one of the easiest ways of dealing with this is to move the routes you don't use to CD (if you have a burner) then all you have to do is copy them back to install a route, then delete them again.

RE: Route Riter compatibility

For those of us that don't have a CD-burner, how 'bout just zipping 'em up in a compressed folder till you need them? Tim

RE: Route Riter compatibility

Hi Chuck,Route-Riter looks in the default routes for Textures/Shapes/Terrtex/Sound/Envfiles so, yes you could delete the World and Tiles folders along with the various Activities/Services etc. It is not only Route-Riter which requires the original Routes, older routes (and a few modern ones) which use Jim's EzStuff4.bat also require all the original routes as a source of shapes/textures etc.

RE: Route Riter compatibility

Mike, thanks for the reply. That's what I needed to know.Bill, does PO&Nv6 install correctly in the stripped down version of MSTS, if I strip it down per Mike's reply? That is, does EzStuff4.bat look anywhere else for files to copy?Tim, I'll start stripping down my Xtracks version of MSTS and let you know what happens. I've already installed Mesaba, but it shouldn't be a problem to un-install it and re-install.

RE: Route Riter compatibility

PO&N installed fine. As far as I can see EZStuff4 is not used only the installme batch file being needed. In any event I cannot see where else any files could be called from except the Global and Template folders which should not be touched in any slimming down exercise.Bill

RE: Route Riter compatibility

Yeah, PO&N6 was packaged with Route Riter, except as a way to stuff a route for editing, EZstuff is obsolete. RR does do pretty much the same thing, the difference being it saves a hell of a lot of space by not copying files for objects that were not used in the route. The installme.bat for PO&N6 was created by Route Riter, but it was then heavily customized afterwards, and does indeed copy files from \Global and \Template, and in addition creates files that don't actually exist, so the Route Control automatic install or using EZstuff4 wouldn't work, since you'd be missing a whole bunch of files like deadtree1.ace, for example, which are created by the batch file itself. The majority of install bats, Route Riter or EZstuff, copy from \Envfiles, \Shapes, \Sound, \Terrtex, and \Textures, and don't need anything else. Some exceptions, Timesaver doesn't include any root files at all, and Marias3, NEC2, and the S&C clone in the file library would need the \Tiles and \World folders from the default routes they were cloned from. This has been discussed before, if you install Marias Pass 3, then delete the \USA2 folder and rename \Routes\Marias3 to \Routes\USA2, since the five Marias folders are in there and the folder name is \USA2, and batch file looking for \USA2\Textures\ wouldn't know the difference and would work fine. TSunpack requires the folder name to be the same as it was packed in tho, so before unpacking a MP3 activity you'd have to rename the folder to \Marias3, then name it back to \USA2 again before installing a new route. The only "downside" (sorry, Bill, couldn't resist) I can see to deleting the \Tiles and \World folders from the six default routes is that it gains you less than half a gigabyte. Hard disk prices being what they are today, 460 megabytes worth of disk space gained equals about 46 cents worth of hard drive.www.pricewatch.com , I particularly recommend the WD800JB special edition with the 8mb cache buffer, reduces stuttering quite a bit.

RE: Route Riter compatibility

Fouty Six Cents! Ouch, too much reality.Tim, looks like the long term solution to our question is to throw money at it. Never the less, I'll continue with our 46¢ solution, after I fix a consist problem that Paul and I are having.
