The bridge gang was quite busy this afternoon after doing the work requested by the foreman (wife), consisting of hanging a new thermometer outside the kitchen window, and prepping another wall for painting. R. Picardi furnished a reduced polygon count version of the 148' tower, however, It reduces the size of the diagonal struts to the point that they appear more like double wires or cables, than relatively rigid members. Although I plan to release the KP sub with fully (at least fully by my standards) detailed bridges, in the case of the two major viaducts, I may also release a kit consisting of the parts modified by Ron. With those parts, it would be relatively easy to delete the more detailed structures and substitude the reduced poly count versions. As it is, the towers you will see in the pix., an assembly of 3 towers (there will be two of these) contains 3480 polygons, as close to the max. as I want to go.In one of the pix. the newbies especially will note that I have indicated some facts.
1. The track is exactly at the correct height for this bridge.
2. The towers are exactly the correct height - BUTThe lower 20 ft. or so, are buried in the ground. The solution is going to be to lower the floor of the valley, and the adjacent Clinch River, so that the top 1ft. of the concrete pedestals is visible. What is shown here, approximates the maximum known high water in the area, which was at 1229', where normal is in the area of 1205 feet. I find this discrepancy to be fairly common and is probably a result of inaccurate Topo. data. I put this piece of bridge in place to test to see if frame rate suffers (not much), and if it would fail to display (it doesn't). Max. speed in this area is 35mph, with 40 being allowed from Starnes to Bald Knob Tunnel.J. H. Sullivan

The proverbial "Yellowdog" who's real name is Calamity. I probably had him chained up in back when you were in town- -he has a tendancy to be a little TOO friendly sometimes and people end up leaving with pawprints they didn't come with. . .

RE: Clinchfield Progress, also notes for Newbies

The Plan is to include the NS OPERATIONALLY from approximately the south portal of Natural Tunnel, through this area, up the north side of Clinch Mtn., through Moccasin Gap & Gate city, and thence to about a mile south of Frisco. This should give the operational types a thrill. At other points (look back at the postings by landnrailroder), there are pieces of the former InterState, and about 7 or 8 miles of the former N&W.By the way, Mark, noting that you are with 3DTrains, I am wondering just how one could, within reason, model the opening of Natural Tunnel, for if it were possible, then the Southern could extend to a point about 2 miles north of Duffield, VA in this simulation. The problem is that one would virtually have to construct the entire rock face of the clift as an object, since the "portal" is roughly 100' high and 150' wide. However the north end is more ordinary, so what you have is a giant funnel, laid on it's side, with a sharp bend in it as well, i.e. a 17D curve. I am seriously considering doing this, and just creating a "hole" in the scenery, and dropping this huge object in it.Jerry

The magic word that unlocks Marc is "Clinchfield". It is his totem railroad just like the SP is for me. We kneel on our Daylight inscribed prayer rugs four times a day facing towards 3rd and Townsend, the holy milepost 0.00.

My Prayer Rug faces W. Broadway in Louisville -- former HQ of the L&N, but my paycheck over the years came from Southern for 13.5 years, and CSX for 21.5 years.J. H. Sullivan

Hi Jerry,An object's probably the only way to do it convincingly. I may need to experiment with RE to find a way of cutting without having to use trainsitions. I found it before, I think I can do it again. If I find something, I'll drop you a line.Cheers!
