I was wondering why some of the track in MSTS is flat. Is it supposed to be like that? I was experimenting with Route Editor(not a bright thing to do!) and i noticed that the 100 meter sections and some others all had flat rails, while other track sections had real 3D rails. Is this normal? I was just wondering. I've seen screen shots of nice looking routes with fully 3D track. I've had MSTS for a while now and haven't figured this thing out. If it is a problem, can someone tell me how to go about making it look better? Or if its normal, then i guess i should leave it be. Thanks! -NW Look at the track in this pic. is it supposed to be like that??
Ok. Yes, it is. If it's the stock track that is. Microsoft made the stock track 2d, possibly to save time, money, or frame rates. However, if you want 3d track, you'd have to have Xtracks installed...and it would have to be compatitable with the railroad.
No, for 3 dimensional shapes you need high horsepower hardware, 1ghz processor 64mb AGP video card, or turn up the detail sliders anyway and suffer the slow framerates. The Mprofile.exe that runs when you first install, or click on the "change video cards" button in the troubleshooter, takes a look at your system and video card and gives an overall compromise quality VS speed setting. To change that, you have to load the sim (not the editors), click on "options", then "advanced display", and change the settings in there. What you have in that picture is the world object quality and/or world object texture quality sliders at a compromise setting, increasing those to max (slider to the right) will give you 3 dimensional track.
akkkk!!! my computer is a real piece of junk!! with only a few Kb's of RAM left, i cant enjoy MSTS without having to wait for at least five mins for the home screen to show up. After that, the sound is all choppy and so are the framerates. My comp is only a year or 2 old, and its already junky. (I guess i need to do some housekeepin 2 nite!) I have xTracks, but some of that is also flat. I guess it does have something to do with the detail bars in the "Options menu" I cant add any more detail now beause the max FR's i can get on any route is at least 10-15. But i will try out your advice, sniper, and see if get any results. im ready to smash this computer!!!!!!!! thanks anyway, -NW
I think it depends on the viewing angle. In RE, I have noticed that some track looks flat from the side but when you view it from the end, it looks 3d. Unfortunately, it still has square rails! Cal Rasmussen Beaverton, ORColumbia Gorge Route (Phase 1 track about 80% complete. Scenery about 5%)
